Poor guy.

Bak to Bill dies

By Graham Clark

A MULTIPLE national hunt race winner died in bizzare circumstances in Newmarket on Tuesday.
Bak to Bill, a winner of more than £75,000 in prizemoney, suffocated after trying to climb over a petition in his horsebox.

The 13-year-old gelding, who ran his last race at Wincanton in March 2007, was being transported back to his former trainer Sue Gardiner's Exeter stables after not settling at the British Horseracing School where he had been retired.

Owner Des Gardiner said: "He was a home breed of ours that gave us a lot of fun during his racing career and he will be sadly missed."

Really sad news...

Her name was Runforthemoneybaby, and she'll be missed.

She was a full sister to Spenditallbaby and the winner of the Cal Cup Juvy Fillies.

Condolences to Jeff Mullins and to her connections.

Good night, good girl.

DEL MAR NOTES: Second horse in three days is euthanized
By JEFF NAHILL - Staff Writer | Sunday, July 20, 2008 3:09 PM PDT

DEL MAR ---- The Polytrack claimed its second horse in three days during training hours when Runforthemoneybaby, a 3-year-old filly, suffered a broken right sesamoid Sunday morning and had to euthanized.

Dakota Padre, a 4-year-old gelding, suffered a similar injury on Friday morning, but he was pulling up after a workout. Runforthemoneybaby was in the midst of a workout under jockey Tyler Baze when she suffered the fatal injury.

"She was just breezing," trainer Jeff Mullins said. "She went to switch leads and took a bad step. It was just a freak thing."

Last year, six horses were fatally injured on the Polytrack, four in workouts and two during the races.

Runforthemoneybaby, a daughter of Unusual Heat, was purchased privately last summer after she finished third in a $100,000 maiden claimer. She went on to finish third in the Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes during Oak Tree's meet at Santa Anita and won the Nov. 3 Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Runforthemoneybaby had run exclusively on the grass this year with a second and a third. She earned $187,876 in eight starts.

"She was one of the best 3-year-old fillies in my barn," Mullins said.

The trainer has been one of Del Mar's staunchest supporters of the switch from dirt to Polytrack.

"I have no concerns about the track," Mullins said.

After trainers complained a year ago about the surface being too loose during the afternoon races, Del Mar added a layer of wax this spring and has been watering the track at least once during the races on the first four days of the meet.

Some Del Mar officials are starting to worry about the breakdowns so early in the meet, but track president Joe Harper said he has complete faith in the surface.

"I'm concerned about the breakdowns," Harper said, "but I'm not concerned about the track."

Harper said he didn't think the surface was too compact from the additional watering.

Harper said he did receive several phone calls before the meet from veterinarians at Hollywood Park warning him about sore horses coming down to Del Mar.

"They told me I had some sore horses coming my way," Harper said, "but I wouldn't put those two horses in that category."

Del Mar vets have scratched a number of horses this meet in the mornings and at the starting gate, a philosophy Harper firmly believes in.

"I've been in the barn area in the mornings and I can see there are horses that aren't sound," Harper said. "I can't keep them off the race track in the mornings, but I can in the afternoons.

"I've told our vets if there are any doubts, scratch the horse."

Sincity, a 3-year-old filly, was scratched at the gate in Sunday's first race when track stewards reported she "didn't warm up properly."

Horse racing

Jockey hurt, horse dies:

Jockey Bryan McNeil was taken to a local hospital and Mr. Smee ended up in one of the infield lakes after Saturday’s final race at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie. When the field of older horses entered the turn of the turf sprint, Mr. Smee appeared to be in distress. As he ducked in, McNeil fell off the side, and Mr. Smee ducked through the inside rail and then into the lake, where he died. McNeil appeared to have a wrist injury.

Racing Post...

Death of popular sire Puissance

by Bloodstock Desk staff

PUISSANCE, a popular sprint sire for many years at Bearstone Stud, was put down last week. The 22-year-old was thought to have broken his shoulder.

Trained by Vincent O'Brien, the son of Thatching was a high-class sprinter, winning three races, including the Group 3 Greenlands Stakes.

The first stallion to retire to Terry Holdcroft's Bearstone Stud in 1991, he wasted no time by siring Group 3 Norfolk Stakes winner Mind Games from his first crop.

Mind Games went on to land two renewals of the Group 2 Temple Stakes before retiring in 1998 to stand alongside his sire at Bearstone, where he got off to a similarly fast start with Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes winner Romantic Myth, a member of his first crop. Mind Games was transferred to Yorton Farm for this season.

Puissance was also the sire of another Norfolk Stakes winner in Rosselli, as well as classy sprint handicappers such as Talbot Avenue and Anniversarypresent. His final small crop are yearlings.

The best foal to be produced out of the Balidar mare Girton, Puissance hailed from the family of another fast horse in Sizzling Melody.

I really dont get the "suffocated after trying to climb over a petition in his horsebox."
What was the petition for?
Did he sign it?
Why was the petition in his horsebox?
What is a horsebox?
Why was he climbing it? Was he trying to escape from his horsebox?
How do you suffocate in a horsebox?
Was it the petition that suffocated the horse?

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS MYSTERIOUS EVENT??

Isn't a horsebox what they call a horsetrailer/van in England? I'm guessing the petition is the divider of the stalls?

Oh that Polytrack is really doing wonders to save horsies.

Maybe we can make a petition to stop polytrack.

Nevermind, wouldn't want to suffocate any horsies.

I thought the same thing....it's all part of the PETA conspiracy....

I guess a partition is a petition in England, but I didn't sign it anyway.
