I hope I don't get these two mixed up, but here goes:

Steve, Delaware Park will not accept a cashiers check OR a certified check same as cash without documentation. For either one, they want a written document from the bank verifying the funds. The doc must have a phone number so they can also call to verify, if they choose. Translated, if you want to deposit a check and use it at Delpark, you had better do it on Mon through Wed because the banks won't be open on Sat afternoon or Sunday for the bookkeepper to make the call.

I think Maryland has to be able to call the bank too to verify the funds, so you have to provide them with a document so they can call your bank. Better get that check in before 12noon on Sat so they can call - forget Sunday.

Now, I can understand someone coming in from out of town being required to do more than just drop a cert check, claim, and roll out of town. But if you are a horseman in MD, and have been for quite a while, and you want to claim in MD, there should be some accomodation made by MD. Just MO....

I always ended up keeping a bunch of cash around the house just in case something came up we wanted to claim. I always got the warm, fuzzies when I carried thousands of dollars in to Pimlico.......

Phys..

It seems that there has been a rash of cashier check forgeries going on that is making them less welcome.. When I went to deposit some Dee Tee Stable buy-ins that were cashier's checks, the teller asked me if I knew the people they were from. I said 'yes.. why?' and she explained the security measures that have been put on for them of late.. HOWEVER.. it's not as if the racetracks don't know and have control over who the horse(s) are going to.

The guy behind this claim is a wealthy guy who has been out of the game for a while and wants to get started again... Here was a nice horse to wade back into the pool with, and the system inhibits his re-entry into the game. Silly...

That is very interesting because I work in real estate and nearly all transactions are done through Certified, Cashier or Attorney Trust checks.
