Jerry....stick to riding horses....you are NOT a business man. Just like Michael Jordan who should have stuck to playing basketball.

I am not sure Jerry wrote that by himself. I am sure their Washington based PR firm had a lot to do with the writing. Did you notice that they never mentioned Richard Fields the driving force behind this group? I find that act of omission to be very interesting.

Pretty good points all around. In fact.....better than " pretty good. "

Sure would be nice if they were equally as concerned with "listening" to the fans...

ain't that the truth, its pretty amazing that the true funders of the sport, their livelihood and everything else that is racing does not even have a place in their plan........

of course are we really needed with one arm bandits?

Worst decision Richard Mandella ever made.....Putting him on "my" boy PP for the BC!!!! I tried to figure out how to cut him off of PP in the pictures i have but none ever came out looking right, so I just stick to looking at PP and not F'ing Bailey!! ummm did I mention I dont care for Jerry Bailey???

Jerry Bailey has the sincerity and eloquence of another famous sports personality when he waxes poetic like this.

He carries all the credibility and statesmanship of Vince McMahon when he begs for an audience in public forums where it is obvious that his mother never told him that it is better to remain silent and have people think your a selfish tight opportunistic fool than to open one's mouth and leave no doubt!!!!

Bailey really is an arrogant ass. I would love to know how much he is getting paid for this. Agree with the poster who said he did not write it, have a feeling some of the words in there are not in his regular vocabulary. Oh yeah, really, Steve Wynn really cares about horse racing.

Ya'll yankees have to stop with the fancy words; "pomposity". Everytime Byk decides to post, I have to reach for the dictionary.
"utters" now that is word a Tenn. boy knows about. LOL...

What's funny, these people come to him for his name. Fortunately, or unfortunately, he is a good businessman. He has no bills, and pays cash for everything, even his new house in Saratoga. So you, or we may not like his team, but he has been very successful, and continues loading the money truck.

I believe different people have very different standards and definitions of success. Personally, the size of one's estate or the digits to the left of the decimal point on one's balance sheet, to me, is a small slice in the pie of measuring success. On the other hand, who should be sitting in judgement of success anyway? And, on that note, what does successs have to do with this? In my mind, very little.

Sure, a no asset, no name, unsuccessful company could not come in and be awarded the franchise. That is not really the issue.

People may or may not like Jerry Bailey as a person, spokesman, business, or otherwise. He may or may not be qualified for said positions and roles. However, what is indisputable is that Jerry Bailey will go down as one of the greatest jockeys this sport has ever seen. However, that too has nothing to do with this issue.

Personally, I don't see why being a great jockey equates to knowing the business side of the racing and racetrack industry, nor do I see how it equates to knowing what the backside issues and needs are. I don't think Bailey's experience as a jockey -- and being a great jockey -- connects with him being a great businessman. Obviously many people here feel the same way.

BTW, just as an FYI, Jerry Bailey is one of the few big name, successful jockeys I do not personally know, he is not a friend or client, or anything of the like. I've never been a fan of his, and that doesn't mean I have any dislike for him. However, strictly as a jockey, I don't think anything really needs to be said.

Eric

He sure does. When you are as cheap as he supposedly is, the money adds up fast. As a guy who hustled tips for over 31 yrs I cant stand cheapskates.Ive been stiffed by alot of famous people over the years. A pox on all of them.

You got to the heart of it....Bailey was absolutely one of the greatest riders of all time. He was honestly a pleasure to watch ride. He was confident, he was prepared, and he was almost always in the right place. However, while he has every right to attempt to cash in on his name, that does not preclude the rest of us from seeing through his remarks. From what I have seen in this thread he doesn't seem to be fooling anybody.

I guess the biggest thing that bothers me is how in one minute he could say that it was going to be great to have the NY Yankees running racing and then when they dropped out he didn't skip a beat in endorsing a carpetbagging Casino mogul. At that point it is nearly impossible to defend that he believes in anything more than the allmighty dollar......and that is just the point about this entire bidding process that should scare everybody. Who are the bidders that really care about racing and who is merely being lured by slot dollars. Since none of them, save NYRA, had any interest whatsoever in 1997 when the franchise was up for renewal, or in any prior years, why should we suddenly believe they care about racing now?

Maybe he is just thrifty

I hear ya, my wife tossed dishes for several years, the stories she tells are something. She refers to them as still having their first communion money.

I really couldn't care less who gets the franchise, except for one nagging thing. I don't see any way bettors won't take it in the shorts if anyone not named NYRA wins.

Thanks, that is the question that should be asked of all of these groups. Where were they before slots came into the equation?? Oh, I know they were home thinking up ways to save racing.
