I would have agreed with you until the specialty of psychiatry about 10 years ago split off a fraction of it's specialty as a subset which is referred to as "addictionologist's". These health care workers specialize in and only treat substance issues with far more accountability and insight than traditional psychiatry. The problem is identifying the real McCoy's from the docs who just say they specialize in substance issues. Medication breakthroughs with newer generation meds, a focus on intensive outpatient daily sessions lasting several hours and after care programs lasting at least 18 months are a few of the innovations that are part of this new approach to helping motivated addicts recover more sucessfully. These professionals use both individual and group approaches but the (1:1) 20 minute BS sessions and antiquated gumby meds never helped anyone who didn't also have a separate psych diagnosis apart from their addiction which is why this specialty ended up with addicts and alcoholics in the first place.

Believe me Scuds their is nothing more maddening than some shrink who won't answer his pager with a life threatening emergency because he's old school and while I have his 17 year old patient on a ventilator near death he's not taking my call for 12 hours while he gets his beauty sleep even though he's the only one that can tell me what this kid took (because he [prescribed the meds) so that I might be able to give an antidote to save a life....

The newer breed get it ......responsibility, and a more reasonable approach to treatment. Capiche!!

I'm not saying they can't help with the substance issue,but the mental problems are not at all easy to treat.It depends on what Chuck is referring to,though.ANXIETY,PANIC ATTACKS etc. are a lot more treatable than depression,for instance.A lot of people have both,but only get real results treating the former.Maybe he is manic depressive.Like I said,it's more a case of them getting the disease less acute(more chronic.)I guess if I was selling pills for it,then I would want people to think it's real treatable stuff,too.
Any decent nurse could probably do a better job than Psychiatrists do.It's not like these people are rewarded for getting people better(like other doctors.)They're getting checks regardless of whether patients get better.I guess they're measured on something,but not on performance.Maybe they get measured on whether or not patients get worse.In other words,are they able to keep people chronic (versus acute.)

The man has a dirty addiction, plain and simple. Look at Heath Ledger, or John Belushi for that matter. They can't help himself, to just say they are weak minded is simplifying it too much.

Has P Val had one too many chances, yes. Should anybody care? Probably not. I for one hope he seeks help to kick his demons once and for all, first for himself and not from a horseracing point of view. As a samaritan it is much better I would say than shoving someone under a bus.

If you want to know the truth,the best way to keep from blowing money is to stay away from other horseplayers.Your sense of reality gets fkd up when you bet with other horseplayers around.Self-discipline weakens quite quickly.If somebody else won...You try to compete with them...If everyone is losing,then it becomes o.k. to lose etc....People think too much about "that day," and having to get even that day etc....I'll split p6 tickets though.Hooves,Scav,Kasept......Bet with them...Will do it again wheneva.
