Putin is trying to expand his reach by keeping Ukraine friendly to Russia, rather than them going into the sphere of the west. his move into crimea won't win him many friends in Ukraine, and will only cause them to cozy up to the west that much more. this will backfire on Putin.

A book I read a few years back outlines Russia's invasion and the discussions following within the Bush administration and Cheney was a part of it. Think the title was A Little War that Shook the World or something like that.

BTW Russia's invasion of Crimea without bloodshed or violence was the direct opposite of what happened in Soviet Georgia probably because unlike the Crimean's, the Georgian's did not want the Russians.

If you’re reading this blog, there’s a good chance you’re liberal. Certainly, Slate’s reader comments show a strong leftward tilt. Many of them express sweeping contempt for Republicans. That’s understandable, because much of the GOP has gone off the deep end. Let's use this as an example.

Surely we 'Americans' can agree that Senior Citizens pensions and deductions ie. Social Security should not be used to finance/back the Ukraine promise of a billion or anything other than SS?

So just dedicate all future SS deductions be used for nothing other than SS payments or the account. In other words put it in not a lock box but in another f'n account.

In an executive order, President Obama named seven Russian officials whose U.S. assets now will be frozen and “may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn or otherwise dealt.” Others, including former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, also have been targeted.

Just imagine the sheer agony of waking up tomorrow morning and all your Russian assets are frozen and can't be transferred. You'd no longer be allowed to conduct transactions using the ruble and countries like China and N. Korea may not take your money either. Would you be able to live with that hanging over your head?

The seven Russian officials — not including President Vladimir Putin or Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev — were targeted based on power in a new executive order signed by the president on Monday morning.

Huh? Professional courtesy? Or is Yelena Mizulina, State Duma deputy, dictating Putin's next move.

While Mr. Obama spoke to Mr. Putin on the phone Sunday night and promised further costs if Russia doesn’t pull back, the Russian president is not among the 11 people named.
