![]() Happy retirement to two spectacular and beloved old gents.
Jambalaya... http://www.derbytrail.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26848 * * * He had run five races in New Zealand before coming to Hong Kong but hadn't won one. To put a positive spin on it though, he was never off the board (three 2nds and two 3rds). He didn't accomplish much those first two seasons in HK although a pattern developed whereby he seemed like he did better by seasons end. His first win, in Hong Kong and in life, came in March of 2007 and it's like the light bulb turned on. He won 2 more that season... the Premiere Cup and a Class 1 race (HKAR Anniversary Cup). The older he got, the better he did. The following season he raced 7 times grabbing 3 wins (a Class 1, the Group 2 International Mile Trial and the Group 1 Queens Silver Jubilee Cup where he shocked the field and the fans and beat home a stellar collection of the old guard and the new elite). His name is Egyptian Ra. http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...2009&raceno=08 15/03/2009 Sha Tin Hong Kong Group One - 1400 Metres THE QUEEN'S SILVER JUBILEE CUP HK$ 4,500,000.00 1 4 EGYPTIAN RA (E002) F Coetzee A S Cruz 126 1151 6 - 2 1 1 1 1.21.01 18 2 1 GOOD BA BA (E201) C Soumillon A Schutz 126 1104 9 3/4 10 10 8 2 1.21.12 1.4 3 6 FELLOWSHIP (G292) Z Purton P O'Sullivan 126 1133 11 2-1/2 11 11 11 3 1.21.40 29 4 13 SIGHT WINNER (J049) B Doyle J Size 126 1063 4 3-3/4 6 6 6 4 1.21.62 99 5 3 ARMADA (E246) E Saint-Martin J Size 126 1102 8 4 7 7 9 5 1.21.66 26 6 2 SACRED KINGDOM (G268) O Doleuze P F Yiu 126 1175 13 4-1/4 12 12 12 6 1.21.69 5.2 7 8 DIM SUM (H226) J Winks J Moore 126 1049 3 4-1/2 1 2 2 7 1.21.75 54 8 12 RIVER JORDAN (G194) G Mosse J Moore 126 1132 7 4-3/4 8 9 7 8 1.21.76 90 9 10 SUNNY POWER (G203) B Prebble K W Lui 126 1115 5 4-3/4 5 5 5 9 1.21.76 44 10 11 SUNNY KING (H105) D Beadman J Moore 126 1202 10 6-1/2 9 8 10 10 1.22.05 31 11 9 JOY AND FUN (H014) Y T Cheng D Cruz 126 1152 2 6-1/2 4 4 4 11 1.22.06 68 12 7 GREEN BIRDIE (H245) W C Marwing C Fownes 126 1081 12 7-1/2 13 13 13 12 1.22.19 27 13 5 ENTHUSED (H303) D Whyte J Size 126 1244 1 8-1/2 3 3 3 13 1.22.37 16 He had 1 2nd place finish (The Champions Mile) a thrid place finish in the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile (which people here might remember as poor Kip DeVille was in that one) and one 4th place finish in the Stewards Cup. This last season he won 2 including the National Day Cup but, by the end of the season, it seemed like maybe he was getting tired. 8th, 9th, 6th...he didn't seem like his grand old self. He missed his shot at the Yasuda Kinen (Japan) after pulling up lame one year and was refered to, on occassion, as the reformed rogue ![]() He retires with a rating of 126 which puts him 6th (behind Able One, Sacred Kingdom, Collection, Good Ba Ba and Happy Zero) on the list of the top 50 runners in HK. Egyptian Ra will be missed greatly and leaves a hole in the heart of Hong Kong racing. Happy retirement. Hope he has a long and happy life somewhere nice. Applause to (one I don't usually applaud) Tony Cruz. Egyptian Ra went from Size to Shum to Hall (all good trainers, of course) but it clearly wasn't until he got to Tony (trainer of Silent Witness, Bullish Luck, Russian Pearl among others) that he really shined. I have had no problem knocking him in the past so it's only fair to mention what a great job he did as well as the fantastic rides by Felix Coetzee and, more recently, phenom Matthew Chadwick. Goodbye good boy and thanks for the memories. |
