From the Bloodhorse back in Nov. '15:

Reddam and his team, which includes trainer Doug O'Neill, will control the racing career of Nyquist.

"It might be a conversation we have at this time next year to see where we are at the end of his 3-year-old season," Darley chief operating officer Dan Pride said. "If it's the right time to retire him, fine, and if it looks like he should stay in training, then he'll stay in training."

I think Darley will be talked into the Pegasus Cup especially if he skips the BC. Of course, they might also simply set their sights lower and aim for the Dirt Mile.

If Arrogate starts in the BCC and doesn't have a start in-between that race and the Travers, he will make for an unprecedented profile in that race.

In the last 25 BCCs, here are the lightly raced 3yos who contested the race. Unlike Arrogate (if he trains up to the BC), all of these started in late September or October as a final "prep".

1995: French Deputy wins debut at 2, wins 2x in February, then on shelf until September when he wins the Jerome. Gets beat in an allowance prep and runs 9th in the BCC.

1996: Formal Gold debuts in June and makes 6 starts prior to the BC, with runner up finishes in the Penn Derby and Meadowlands Cup. Mild rally for 5th a few lengths behind the blanket finish of Alphabet Soup, Cigar, etc. Will's Way debuts in February, wins the Travers, but tanks in both the Super Derby and BCC (7th).

1997: Behrens debuts in January, runs a close second in the Travers, wins the 4-horse $1 million Pegasus, then buried by Skip Away in the BCC.

1998: Arch ran once at 2, lightly raced until summer, won the Super Derby and Fayette, but finishes last in the BCC (Gentlemen eased).

2000: Tiznow debuts in April, runs 8 times leading up to BCC. Won Super Derby at 10f, like Arrogate, in track record time (1:59+). Also took Goodwood. Won BCC by a nose over Giant's Causeway.

2001: Orientate ran twice at 2, laid up until following summer, won Indiana Derby, then ran last in Tiznow's second BCC.

2009: Girolamo ran in stakes at 2, but on shelf until August at 3, won Jerome and then last on synthetic BCC to Zenyatta.

2011: Rattlesnake Bridge debuts in February, runs 2nd in the Travers, then only 9th in BCC to Drosselmeyer.

2012: Nonios debuts in February, places in Haskell, 5th in Travers and 6th in BCC to Fort Larned.

2014: V.E. Day debuts in January, wins Travers. 11th in BCC.

I could be wrong here, but it seems to me that this year the BC will have more horses than usual coming into their races off of semi-layoffs.
I never really like the August/early Sept. to the Cup move,so I'll be curious how the layoff horses fare.
I know this,if the August to the Cup horses do well........I won't.
