Sunday, January 06, 2008 Aitken and Bell in scintillating form SHIHAM RAMIZ Followers of leading South China Morning Post's Racing tipsters Alan Aitken and John Bell went home with two of the big exotics at the New Year's Day meeting, with Aitken landing the 183-1 treble with his top selections and Bell the third double trio at odds of more than 3,900-1. It was a mighty finish to the first meeting of 2008 for Aitken, our chief racing writer and Bell, our resident form analyst-journalist. Between the pair they correctly found seven winners as top selections. Aitken, aka Hats, tipped the $1,277.50 quinella in race seven as well as the $1,844 treble, while Bell found the three placegetters from his four selections in both races nine and 10 (the two legs of the third DT). The feature race, the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (Pocket Money 1, Down Town 2, Floral Pegasus 3) was the primary source of the big dividends, with Bell's second selection Down Town injecting the value into all multiples. The race 10 Quinella paid $1,681, the Trio $2,441 while the third double trio paid $39,034 for a $10 investment. Aitken's front page tipping features have been almost gild-edged this season and so it proved once again, with Pocket Money bravely seeing off the high-class field, despite an unfortunate wide trip. The John Size-trained Pocket Money paid a win dividend of $83.50. The in-form tipster landed six winners on December 23 meeting at Sha Tin and another three on December 26 . His other winners at this meeting were My Home Town ($22.50, second best bet), Craig's Dragon ($35, best bet) and Congratulation ($71). That result took him to the top of the Straight Bets poll, both by number of winners and profitability. Bell's winners also included My Home Town and Craig's Dragon, as well as his best bet of the day Never Look Back ($35). Aitken and Bell are dominating the tips panel this term, almost across the board. Craig's Dragon was Aitken's 17th winning best bet (Nap) of the term, at a profit of $216.50 (surveyed on $10 win only investments). His four winners for the day took him to 76 with a profit of $119.00. John Bell's big afternoon cemented his place in the quinella standings, adding four more for the programme to take his season's tally to 80, with followers who have been level staking his quinellas at $10 each ($60 per race) now showing a profit of $1,419 after 31 meetings. Bell is also looming dangerously on the Trio poll, where he currently sits second to statistics editor Vincent Wong (Shannon). The best team of experts in racing are yours, for every Wednesday night and weekend race meeting, in the big liftout guide of the South China Morning Post, or online at www.racing.scmp.com. |

Let's play Hong Kong!
(For fun) R1... I don't care how good Perfect Athlete looks, how can you pass up a name like Pleasure Pleasure? His only win this season was with Dye up... maybe he likes him. Hell, Bulldozer only behaved for two jockeys..... R1, PP / Gen Speed R2..... Bold Champion, winner - prettiest tail award for the night , with Brettie up. Workout partner to Bite My Dust.... I think they're both improving. Spirit of Lo Pan is probably the favorite here..... R3.....God I love this field, especially the old guys. Natural Blitz and Scintillation might not be as good as they once were but Scintillation has a shot. Planet Ruler is an icon. Doesn't win much these days but whatever. Country Music has been hurt soooo many times now it's just sad. One guess who trains him. I think Gallant is right with her Gains theory and this one is improving. Fifty Fifty has been having a really nice season. Don't think as much of him as the gentlemen (he's pretty though, nice dark boy ) BUT I think it might be one of those (kinda sad) changing of the guard races and besides, he DOES like coming in 2nd. My heart is not in this but Friendly Gains / Fifty Fifty. R4.....As You Wish beat the crap outta him in the past but Couldn't Care Less who lives up to his name on occassion is my boy. NO objectivity... good luck to him. R5.....Prideoftheorient, who was workout partner to Green in Blue (rest in peace, good boy). He should be at decent odds. R6..... All the Wong boys are crazy. Tossup between Floral Nirvana and Industrial Success with Courageousheart right behind. R8..... Even though Leung is up, Reunion. R8... Come home safe, First Knight. It's his 93rd start. No pick. R9... All the buzz is about Mariachi but I'll stick with First Baby, who had a nice season last year, and Eight Plus Nine, who i think is underated. R10..... Nice, nice field with Supreme gains a standby starter. Sentimental here...... He Can Tango and Kindacross UNLESS Supreme gains goes in..... he'd win. Come home safe boys. Barrier trials (Helene Brilliant 2nd in batch 1..... yea!) http://www.hkjc.com/english/press/btrs.asp Last edited by my miss storm cat : 01-05-2008 at 10:42 PM. |

SECRET OF KINGS was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, HE CAN TANGO was steadied away from the heels of GREAT GUY. From the outside barrier, JIANG JUN was taken across behind runners. After the 1000 Metres, JIANG JUN was checked to avoid the heels of INSPIRATION which at this time was also checked to avoid the heels of BEAR MACHO which came away from the heels of GREAT GUY. In the circumstances, no action was taken. After the 600 Metres, SECRET OF KINGS was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of KINDACROSS. For the majority of the Home Straight, KINDACROSS, INSPIRATION and GALLANT LION were held up and unable to obtain clear running. An inquiry into the reason for AMPLE GAINS being checked after the 150 Metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed. At the 100 Metres, INSPIRATION, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was hampered and bumped on two occasions by GALLANT LION (S Dye) which was shifting out to obtain clear running. S Dye was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. S Dye was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the winning post he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of FULL OF JOY, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. S Dye was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 17 January 2008 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 9 January 2008. In addition, S Dye was fined $20,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Throughout the race, LOTZATOW and FULL OF JOY travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, D Beadman (INSPIRATION) said he had been instructed to ensure his mount had cover and was not ridden along to go forward. He said because of this he rode INSPIRATION quietly in the early stages and obtained a position behind BEAR MACHO which he believed would have been racing about midfield. He said after the 1000 Metres the tempo of the race steadied when GREAT GUY allowed REGENCY DRAGON to cross to race outside the leader. He said when this occurred, INSPIRATION, which was proving difficult to settle, was checked away from the heels of BEAR MACHO and lost further ground and as a consequence travelled further back in the field. He said INSPIRATION continued to travel keenly after this. He said in the Straight INSPIRATION was held up for clear running, however, gave him the feeling that it would not close the race off strongly because of the manner in which it had travelled in the early part of the race. The Stewards will speak with Mr J Moore, trainer of INSPIRATION, at a date to be fixed. INSPIRATION, HE CAN TANGO and WEI HAI INVINCIBLE were sent for sampling. |

Geez, I didn't realize that Fifty Fifty went crazy.....
One of the ponies had to be put down. I don't have the name, but FF threw off his rider twice, galloped the course and slammed into another horse. |
