My thing is this, if you are tornado chasing, you already have a plan set up for hilarious things happening, you eliminate panic, probably the most overwhelming feeling there is, out of the equation. I agree that if you don't know that a serious tornado is about to come down, I would want no part of that.

i get scavs.

no one talks much about it but there is a thrill in surviving a natural disaster. even one where other's perish.

i think the key to enjoyment is not being injured and having relativly little personal property loss. the fear you felt during the event itself soon fades and you're left with what can only be called a thrill.

it's poor form to talk about it where so many other's have suffered dramatic losses but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

i'd rather not go through another big earthquake but if i make it through unscathed again, i'm pretty sure i'd look back on it as an exciting change from normal life.

In Carbondale, there was a real serious storm coming through, so inside of going inside, got into 'the Scav' and tore ass to get to the middle of a field and see if I could see a tornado, no luck

For as little as $750 to $1,000 you can spend a week in the Plains and beyond during the peak season in a van chasing severe storms all over looking for that elusive tornado with a couple other crazy sobs.

I dont know how all the faults etc... are related
but we had an Earthquake just south of San Antonio
about a week and a half ago. Last time this happened in the area was
1992 I think and was tiny. This one was fairly large 3.8 (for here).

We almost never have earthquakes.
Weird stuff. I wonder if these things
are related.

Did they say how deep this one occurred?

get out of your cubicle and imagine having to go outside (to get to my basement, no interior doors) no TV or radio and the air horns going off at 2 in the morning, total darkness outside and all you can hear is the wind, knowing that if it hits anywhere nearby you are totaly, completely f*cked....and enjoy the water that is pouring in, onto the floor through the hundred year old limestone walls. And don't forget to save the dogs.

I think it would be neat over a cornfield in the daylight.
But not where people are at any time.

After the Katrina/Houston hurricanes it was
not pleasant having huge numbers of people
without much money entering your city basically
destitute. All piled up in Gyms etc... around the
city, babies crying and all. Pretty messed up.

Hurricanes on satellite views are awesome.
The fascination wanes when you have to
pick up the pieces.

Again, alot of people are missing the point here. What you are describing is not a controlled environment. And while I understand that you can not control a tornado, what I want to do is chase the darn things and get as close as I can, without endangering myself. It is somewhat controlled.

It isn't like I am going to see a tornado, run straight at it and maybe want to play catch with someone right in front of it, just would like to experience the raw power/sounds that it provides, without endangering myself.

not trying to argue with you here Tom, but I think you are missing the point somewhat.
Since I have lived in my current location there have been 2 tornados that have touched down within 5 miles of me....they don't conveniently happen during the day so you can watch and see what's happening...and they destroy lives and property.
The last one killed a whole bunch of animals that were trapped when the barn they were in fell on them....
while it may be a thrill to see one rip through a corn field, you have to consider that it just ruined someone's crop (ie earnings) for the year....they are never without consequence.

Its the awesome nature thing.
I think lightning is absolutely awesome.

Have seen lightning strike a tree and
my wife's car just in front of me at a traffic light.
My daughter learned expletives from my
wife. I got to see the air around their
car glow purple. They were crying too
much for more thorough questioning concerning
the event. I was not hearing well anyway.

Its clear they did not find it fascinating.
The people in the neighborhood next to
us that got ripped by a small tornado were
not curious either.

I understand that part, 100%. And if tornado's could be prevented, I would be all for it, but I doubt nature would allow that from happening.
