How about Lady's Secret? Gimme the PE every time, she had the class in the pedigree and on the track.

Also, when Ashado sold (in a far better market) she was a young mare, just off the track at age 4. Assuming she produces 4 foals every 5 years til about age 20, the buyer can expect 12 foals from her if he keeps her for life. Azeri (selling in a poor market) is 11, with far fewer potential foals and a slightly weaker pedigree.

If I were an egotistical jillionaire, I'd buy Azeri because I always was in awe of her and pride in owning her would mean more than price to me. As a business prospect however, Azeri has some downside at the apparent asking price.
Given my avatar I think you know who I'd choose on track but I'd agree with you, she has the better breeding prospects- especially considering Goulash's incredible produce record.

I'll be more excited for the Azeri babies, however.

I personally think its a hard sale to go to. There are just so many types of horses for sale. I think you really have to be organized and keep you mind on what you are there for. I went looking for a 2yr old or racing prospect and got shut out. I was hoping to get a good price on one but the ones I looked at went a little higher than I expected. At least I got some good bread pudding for lunch....

My club has a horse for sale tomorrow, hip 491, if you are interested.

https://secure.keeneland.com/sales/jan09/pdfs/491.pdf

I think the purpose of it, though, is for the majority owners to buy us out.

This sale has opened my eyes to the number of well bred horses, that are too crippled to make it to the track.
It makes me wonder what happens to the Colts that can't make it to the track. ??

$65,000 looks like a terrific number for a Petitionville 2yo in this market considering Island Fashion appears to simply be a freak out of an otherwise totally unproductive mare.
For a Full sister to a grade 1 winner that is still quite a bargin. I didnt see her but i would gather she is not very pretty

She could reasonably be expected to produce 4 or even 5 more foals but if the first two don't pan out, how much will you get for the ones you breed out of her.

Despite her exceptional career, right now Azeri is an 11yo mare with no production record and average breeding. Yes, she's a legend (I was a huge fan) but when it comes to dollars and cents, you have to be analytical.
I think the age thing has pretty much been dismissed . It's only an issue for the buyer for driving down the price . Age makes no difference in the quality of the foals .

As for those little foals, I always feel bad for babies like that. Poor little things are a few days old and standing in the sales ring after having to stand there in the January cold wondering what the he!! is going on. They are cute though. At least the buyer gets to look over the baby they are getting.
I think a 7.7mil RNA INDY is a production value record even if the colts value was inflated..

No difference in the quality of the foals but in the # of foals you can expect to get from her, assuming good health and an average lifespan.

Also, since Vallenzeri is not exactly bred to be a hotshot 2yo (or even an early 3yo type) it means that the potential buyer would have to wait that much longer for Azeri's strength or weakness to show. From a buyers point of view, I'd like to see a mare with a 2yo by Speightstown or other "2yo sire" because there is a greater chance that early wins by that foal make the one the mare is carrying more useful and therefor more valuable at auction.

Remember too that the market was not kind to mares like Winning Colors and Lady's Secret after their early foals were not that good. If Azeri's first 3 or 4 foals struggle at the races do you think tht her 5th (born when she's about 17) will sell for a lot of money? I don't.

Yeah I know all about Sky Beauty and the frogs she spit out but Maplejinsky and her line which is reasonably close to Sky Beauty did great work... I just hated Ashado thought she was a Pletcher chem job that never distinguished herself as anything special and i am glad the shiek has her.. She will eat well have the best medical care and hopefully never toss anything from her chemically infused body..lol

I think his immense success was the product of great abilty, incredible work ethic, and the advent of some of the best chemical use in the industry. He is super smart hired the best vet's who had the best chemicals and spent millions of dollars winning tens of millions of dollars.
