I didn't read all of the comments under Steve's article but from watching the race live and on replay it was obvious that Calvin was not being abusive. He was urging her for everything she had and if he truly thought she wasn't going to be able to do it, I think he would have laid off a bit.
The people that commenting about a whip have most likely never been around a horse nor been on the back of one. There are horses at the barn that I would not get on the back of without a whip (or crop or bat or whatever you want to call them now.) These people hear whip and think of 40 lashes... Did they have anything to say about Utter Quality in the Forego who wouldn't even turn around in the post parade until an outrider came out with a longeing whip to get him going?
