![]() Curlin's Dam, Sherriff's Deputy, Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Thursday, July 19, 2012 8:06 PM Posted: Thursday, July 19, 2012 12:47 PM Sherriff's Deputy, the dam of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin , has been euthanized at Issam Fares' Fares Farm near Lexington because of complications from laminitis. The daughter of Deputy Minister was 18. Curlin, by Smart Strike , was Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008. During his first Horse of the Year season, he won the Breeders' Cup Classic − Powered by Dodge (gr. I), the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), and two other graded stakes. He finished second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and also was voted champion 3-year-old male. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky. "Sherriff's Deputy has been a dear part of the Fares Farm family for 18 years, and she's responsible for some of our fondest memories," said Shannon White, general manager at Fares. "I'd like to thank farm manager Carrie Clark and veterinarians Laurie Metcalf, Christina Lu, and Raul Bras for their diligence and care in providing for a comfortable and productive life for Sherriff's Deputy. "I have no doubt that Curlin got his grit and determination from this mare; her constitution and resolve were absolutely unparalleled," White added. Bred by Fares Farm, Sherriff's Deputy is out of grade II winner Barbarika (by Bates Motel). Sherriff's Deputy is the dam of two other winners. Her other foals include an unplaced 3-year-old full brother to Curlin named Deputy Striker and a Distorted Humor weanling filly. Sherriff's Deputy was not bred in 2012. ![]() It's a strange and very nice thing being able to remove a name from this list!
Near fatality Del Mar almost suffered its third fatality in the first three days of the meet when Appetizing, a 3-year-old filly, was vanned off after the fourth race on the turf course. Track stewards initially reported the filly suffered broken sesamoids in her right front foreleg and was euthanized. They amended the report prior to the final race of Friday's card, saying the Barry Abrams-trained filly was alive and being examined by private veterinarians. Abrams said late Friday night the filly suffered a suspensory (ligament) injury and would be able to come back in six months to race. "The filly was dead tired and (jockey Chantal Sutherland) pulled her up too quick and she took a bad step," said Abrams. "The vets took X-rays, and there are no broken sesamoids. She doesn't have to be put down." The daughter of Unusual Heat had earned $6,669 in her first two starts for owner Dyan Abrams. Del Mar had one fatality during the races on Wednesday and another during morning training hours on Thursday. http://www.nctimes.com/sports/equest...90d31a625.html |

![]() Exceller's Brother American Standard Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, July 23, 2012 5:57 PM Posted: Monday, July 23, 2012 5:28 PM American Standard, a 32-year-old pensioned stallion by In Reality, died July 21 because of the infirmities of old age. “He was a smart, happy, character of a horse that always looked and acted years younger than he was,” said Michael Lischin, co-owner of Dutchess Views Farm near Pine Plains, N.Y. “We are glad he was healthy and active right up until the day he died.” Bred by North Ridge Farm out of 1986 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Too Bald (by Bald Eagle), American Standard was a stakes winner and a half brother to four added-money winners, including champion 2-year-old male Capote and major international winner Exceller. American Standard gained a measure of fame during his racing career. He became the 100th stakes winner trained by Hall of Famer Laz Barrera when he won the 1984 Orange County Handicap. During his career, American Standard carved out a record of 5-7-5 from 31 starts and earned $180,120. American Standard is represented 13 stakes winners, including grade II winners American Royale and Bluesthestandard. His progeny earnings are more than $10.9 million. ![]() Peaks and Valleys dies at 20
By Brisnet.com: The Handicapper's Edge Updated: Monday, July 23, 2012 9:28 PM Posted: Monday, July 23, 2012 5:55 PM Peaks and Valleys, Canada's Horse of the Year and champion three-year-old colt of 1995, has died at the age of 20. The Grade 1-winning millionaire and sire, who had been standing at Gardiner Farms in Ontario since 2006, succumbed to the infirmities of his age. A homebred campaigned by Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stable, Peaks and Valleys was bred on the potent Blushing Groom/Nijinsky II cross. The son of Mt. Livermore was produced by the winning Green Dancer mare Strike a Balance. His half-sister, multiple stakes heroine and Grade 2-placed Alternate, has been in the news as the dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Alternation, who has captured this season's Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap, Grade 3 Pimlico Special, Grade 3 Razorback Handicap and Essex Handicap. Peaks and Valleys won his first three starts as a juvenile for trainer Jim Day, including a six-length romp in the Cradle over Tejano Run. He concluded 1994 with a third in the Grade 3 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs. After a sharp second to Mr. Greeley in the Grade 3 Lafayette in his sophomore debut, Peaks and Valleys rallied in time to take the Grade 3 Derby Trial and drove to a two-length decision in the Grade 2 Illinois Derby, defeating Da Hoss. He did not reappear until August, when warming up for bigger engagements with a seven-furlong optional claiming score. He came up a neck shy against lone speed Kiridashi next out in the Col. R.S. McLaughlin, but that effort had him primed for their Grade 1 rematch two weeks later. Peaks and Valleys was sent off as the 2-1 favorite in the Molson Export Million, and duly obliged with a convincing 2 1/2-length victory. Queen's Plate hero Regal Discovery had to settle for second; Mt. Sassafras, a future Canadian Horse of the Year, was third; and Petionville was fourth. Kiridashi tired to fifth after arguing the pace. Peaks and Valleys further boosted his Sovereign Award credentials in the Grade 1 Meadowlands Cup Handicap, where he drew off to another 2 1/2-length score. His beaten rivals included Concern and L'Carriere. Although Peaks and Valleys ended the year with a sixth behind Hall of Famer Cigar and L'Carriere in the Breeders' Cup Classic, he had done enough to earn the Canadian Horse of the Year and divisional titles. Transferred to Bill Mott for his 1996 campaign, Peaks and Valleys rolled by four lengths in a Belmont Park allowance in his return to action. Third to Mahogany Hall and Serena's Song in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, he was runner-up to old foe L'Carriere in the Grade 3 Saratoga Cup Handicap. He failed to fire when sixth in the Grade 3 Sport Page Handicap, and was then retired with a record of 16-9-3-2, $1,589,270. "The success Mrs. Abercrombie enjoyed with Peaks and Valleys was a turning point for our program," Pin Oak General Manager Clifford Barry said. "He let all of us know what it was like to participate in racing at the very highest level." Entering stud at Pin Oak near Versailles, Kentucky, Peaks and Valleys sired such major performers as Grade 2-winning millionaire Dollar Bill, whose five Grade 1 placings include the Travers, Blue Grass and Stephen Foster Handicap; Chamrousse, queen of the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan and runner-up in the Grade 1 Mother Goose; Grade 2 Mazarine victress Higher World; multiple Grade 3 scorer Happy Trails; and Grade 3 vixen Meribel. Daughters of Peaks and Valleys have produced the likes of Rose Catherine, Warren's Jitterbug and Valli with a Vow. Peaks and Valleys stood the 2012 season for a fee of C$4,000. "We would like to thank the entire staff at Gardiner Farm, especially the late Dr. Mike Colterjohn and his assistant Sherry McLean, for the tremendous care they gave Peaks and Valleys over the years," Barry said. Peaks and Valleys will be returned to his birthplace and buried at Pin Oak Stud. Copyright © 2012 Blood-Horse Publications. All rights reserved internationally.

![]() Sprint Champion Lit de Justice Dies
