As discussed with Joe Clancy Friday, Alajmal has a real predilection for Camden and he parlayed it into a Colonial Cup win Saturday. Third in this event in 2012, the Shadwell-bred First Samurai bay had been winless on the year since starting his season with a driving win in the local Carolina Cup in March.
His upset leaves the Chasers without an obvious Champion, given that no runner was able to annex more than one G1 on the year. Mrs. Bryant's Gustavian, trained by Leslie Young and ridden by husband Paddy, had the most consistent year with a Lonesome Glory (G1) win and placements in the Grand National (G1), National Hunt (G2) and Temple Gwathmey (G3) and likely gets my vote. Italian Wedding and Divine Fortune fill out the ballot as 2-3.
