FYI, apparently Honor A.P. will not run, but is pointing to the Sham stakes.

This only makes sense to me if the plan is the Sham, Lewis and SA Derby as preps..If they skip the Lewis, then Honor A.P. will only have two Derby preps and four total career races prior to the KY Derby. On the other hand, though, 3 prep races before the grind of the TC trail is probably too much... I’ll trust Shirreffs, but I think I’d have preferred the Futurity, Lewis and SA Derby route.

Not knowing enough about CA racing, why can’t they draw the same types of fields at Los Alamitos as they did at Hollywood Park for the Futurity? If Del Mar is going to expand its meet, should they host a race there with derby qualifying points instead of Los Al? I’d have to assume that they’d routinely get more than 4-6 horse fields.

Del Mar Nov. meet is averaging 8.5 per race but the median per race is about 5.5

Hmmm. Well I could be wrong about location then.

Steve talked about the field size a bit today and I totally agree that the quality of the 4 horses is great. I think there is general disappointment because the original 6 possible/probable horses would have really made this a stacked field and exciting race.

Totally agree about your disappointment.
My thought was that Del Mar(born, raised and still live there)is starting to align itself with Santa Anita's policies and practices and that with the trainers and owners leaving make for very disappointing, small fields except for big days witch raises those averages much higher.
I don't think they need more races or race days, they need more horses and larger fields.
This is what most Gambler/thoroughbred fans want. Not concerts or Kiddie days
