From Racing Post...
Enticing could take on older horses in the Nunthorpe by Neil Morrice ENTICING, who preserved her unbeaten record by the skin of her teeth in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood last week, could be asked to take on her elders in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York on August 24. Encouraged by the good record of juveniles in a race which always helps sort out the champion sprinter accolade, trainer William Haggas is looking to the Nunthorpe as the first of two visits to York with the Lael Stables-owned filly. Haggas said: "Enticing is absolutely fine after Goodwood. The Flying Childers Stakes isan obvious race to go for but the Nunthorpe is also under consideration. It might be an outside shot and she would have to be supplemented, but she'd get all the allowances and would be competing off 7st12lb. It's tempting." At Goodwood, Enticing engaged in a battle royal with Wi Dud and when the pair flashed across the line in unison most observers thought the latter had prevailed, only for the photo to show Haggas's filly the winner by a whisker. Since being opened-up to two-year-olds, the Nunthorpe has attracted some household names from that division, notably Lyric Fantasy, who landed the 5f prize for the late Lord Carnarvon and trainer Richard Hannon. La Cucaracha is another distaffer on course for the VCbet-sponsored sprint after winning at Goodwood. The Barry Hills-trained filly is reported to have come out of winning the King George Stakes at Goodwood in her stride. Hills's son and assistant Charlie said: "She's come out of it fine and we know she likes York. The mare has really come to herself in the last few weeks." Hellvelyn, 20-1 with sponsors Stan James for next year's 2,000 Guineas, looks set for a first trip abroad for his next appearance, with trainer Bryan Smart favouring the Prix Morny at Deauville. The Coventry Stakes winner is the pride and joy of his Hambleton trainer, who paraded him in front of 200 people at his owners' day on Sunday. "He's in good order and looks fantastic," reported Smart, who envisages his charge running no more than twice more before the end of the season. "The Phoenix Stakes and the Morny are a week apart and you have to keep in mind the swamp fever scare in Ireland, which is swaying me towards the Deauville race. "We certainly don't want the ground to get any firmer than it was at Royal Ascot. We might have a better chance of some suitable ground in France." Hellvelyn confirmed the promise of his victories at Leicester and Pontefract by gamely holding Major Cadeaux by three-quarters of a length in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. Smart added: "I think the world of Hellvelyn and would probably opt for the Middle Park Stakes later on." |
