about the ride mario gave yesterday
22.1 to the quarter flying with a 28 to 1 shot?
then what was it 45 and change to the half?

i dont know to me he showed he could sit and pounce when needed
for me a questionable ride but what the hell do i know?

He's not a good jockey. Not much else to say. I can name 25 jockeys I'd want over him.

It was truly awful from beginning to end. I can understand riding like you're on the best horse, but he seriously rode like if any other horse was ever in front of him then he had no chance to win. It was bizarre. He should have had the exact same trip Gun Runner had in the Kentucky Derby.

While I don't think Mario is anywhere near a top jock, I have to think that his instructions were to stalk off the speed and the horse was way too keen and would not cooperate. Nyquist wasn't good enough yesterday IMO.

I said as much right after the race but it's nothing to lose sleep over. Mario shouldn't take all of the blame.

The horse didn't like the track. That course this weekend was not up to the standard for a grade 1 event. But it really doesn't matter because Nyquist wasn't winning the Belmont and I'm confident in that even if they run him.

They shouldn't run him. Save the horse for the summer/fall.

46 2/5
The two pacesetters ran slower than the rest of the field in the second quarter mile of the race, in part because Perez entered the first turn 3 wide while carrying Nyquist 4 wide, both losing the advantage of saving ground and running the entire second quarter wider than necessary. The damage had been done in the first quarter.

I feel it's too easy to use 20/20 hindsight to place blame after the fact. Let's say for a minute that Gutierrez had eased back 12 seconds into the race, sensing the pace was too fast. He got a great start, making it all the more difficult to strangle his mount enough to ease inside of Lino, and had he attempted that it may have looked even more questionable. I don't think his position was a win/win type.

Hindsight nothin...I knew he was an idiot 10 seconds into the race. And if you didn't see those signs, you definitely knew it a minute into the race as MG was riding Nyquist like he was Ron Turcotte in the '73 Belmont.

I have more of a gripe with Perez as I needed Lino to find 3rd or 4th.

ride was awful..mario had to clock, no concept of how fast..not only through the opening quarter either. Saw the .22 and knew it was game over. Second fastest opening quarter in preakness history...

On the NBC feed you can see Mario Guitierrez look at Fernando Perez on the backstretch as if to say why are you taking me wide and dueling with me up front?

Probably payback from some incident at Hastings a few years ago when they were both there. Nothing like sweet revenge on the grandest stage.

I think the camp knew Nyquist would not like taking mud kickback so they sent him.

Andy Beyer eviscerated Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez for their tactics in on the radio show this morning.

I get not wanting kickback but why not simply put him in 2nd..angled out or hugging the rail opposite the pace setter?

Understand, but nobody expects to go 22 and change. Even if one of the other speeds goes and they are 23.0, it may have been a good tactic. Look how close they were to a Derby pace that looked "too fast".

You saw the 22 and knew it was game over? Did you think it was game over when you saw the 22 in the Kentucky Derby?

I believe Timeform had the first half mile virtually identical in both the preakness and the derby.
