Default Majerus

Maybe not a good idea having this guy show how to play defense (in the studio at ESPN.)The guy is gasping for air in about 5 seconds of shuffling around.80% chance of living 2 years, and 10% chance of living 10 years.

Majerus is a man of some interest in the Minneapolis area. With the University of Minnesota firing Dan Monson, he's been one of the rumored names to replace him. It's highly unlikely for a few reasons-
1) The health concerns of Majerus
2) The U. of MN athletic Dept. is $$$ strapped, and it would cost some big $$$ (and a big tenured hotel bill...room service included) to pay him.
3) Since he's not currently coaching, the U. could've and maybe should've already gone after him if they had any interest.
4) If they're gonna spend $$$ to get a big name, they're gonna hope that Flip Saunders chokes in the NBA playoffs, so they can go after him (a U. alum, former T-Wolves coach, local ties).
5) Can Majerus repeat what he did in Utah? Big Ten is more tough than the Mountain West, he's been out of coaching for about 5 years now... I dunno...

if U of Mn is strapped for cash, what were they thinking by firing glen mason? he was getting them in bowl games. win or lose thats a BIG pay check.

U of Mn probably can't afford majerus. best bet is probably getting young guy and let him build. JMO

It's not just about the firing of Mason, it's the firing of Monson as well. They both had contract extensions given to them within the last 3 years, and now both received buyouts. It's part of the reason why the A.D. is cash strapped.

But both moves had to be made. Mason was fired, because the football program plateau'd, and it wasn't making any $$$$. They weren't able to win any big games that put them over the top. Mason had also had a history of blowing a lot of games where they had huge leads only to collapse. He also was viewed as smug and arrogant by a lot of people in the Minnesota area.

As for Monson, the Basketball team never won under him. The team was under NCAA sanctions for the first few years of his tenure, but those years passed and there was still no success. You guys have seen how bad the Gophers were this year. They set a school record for losses in the season. The team looked hopeless to improve under him, and frankly he was a bad coach. His strategy seemed all about slinging threes and outscoring teams. Defense and rebounding were never a priority for Monson.
