Default What is nice about SS

SS is trained by Carl who is semi-retired and owned by an 83 year old man who doesn't need the money. It seems real posible that SS will return for his 4 year old season (at least I hope).

Smarty Jones was injured if you don't recall.. The same injury in fact that sidelined Jazil for 6 montrhs. There was no guarantee that Smarty would come back 100%, and it made sense for him to retire. I couldn't fault the Chapman's for that one.. If you use a 'they need the money' example, how about Sheikh Mo with Bernardini? No excuse possible..

I'm not so sure Jazil didn't come back 100%....as he wasn't that much to start with.

Be careful kasept....you could be seen as defending someone in the industry in this post.
You know how some on here won't stand for that!

'back in the day" they would have given a horse like smarty jones the 6 or 9 months needed to recover. hey, i'm not knocking anybody here, i'm just saying the premise of whether an owner needing the money or not really doesn't seem to play a part in whether they retire them or not.

I cant fault the Chapman's for retiring Smarty either. Not only was he injured, but Mr Chapman's health was not so good either. I think it was in their best interest and the horses that they retire Smarty.

I also understand when the Sheikh retires a horse. They are also a breeding operation and they want more and more runners so they can continue their quest to dominate racing. Not saying I agree, but I do understand.

With all of the talk about racing 'needing' a Triple Crown winner, regardless of which side you are on, wouldn't it be absolutely great for there to be a gelding to win it? Imagine just how great it would be for the owners to take the horse around the country and let fans all over see a horse that won the TC.

I am very glad that SS won this year, but I highly doubt that he will be back next year. Just doesn't make financial sense. He will go on to win a few more big races this year, probably not the TC, but a few big ones, and then retire to stud...

No but part of owning a horse is being able to see the horse in person when he races. Mr Chapman couldnt travel so why would be own and race the horse anymore?
