Default 1/23: Gulfstream (6th-9th)

Enjoyed Monday's holiday fare around the country and offered OK run at Santa Anita carry.. First try at Oaklawn was closer than it looked as Simon's Makutus was likely best in the P4 opener and Pompeii City was achingly nipped in the Leg B.. Gulfstream P4 Wednesday looks like the spot with limited ovals active..

GULFSTREAM

6th: S/ALW, 4+, 6f (P4, P3, DD, Super)

Chalky-looking start to P4 unless #1 Lucky Frolic can shake off earliest challenges and withstand subsequent attacks from logical presser #4 Blue Pepsi Lodge and stalker #8 Clerpark..

Best Value: #1 Lucky Frolic 6-1 2nd
Most Likely: #8 Clerpark 5-2
Next Best: #4 Blue Pepsi Lodge 2-1 WON
Exotics Add: #7 SCR

7th: MSW, 3yo-F, 1m-T (P3, DD, Super)

Tricky-looking Maiden event features 4 firsters and 3 first time turfers; Of those with visits to the post, railbird #1 Perfect Pussycat SCR appreciated move to lawn last out at Calder and offers value; Tagg's #6 Tessitura was beaten 9L in BEL career bow on grass, but that was infinitely better than main track sprint runback at AQU; #14-AE Money My Honey would be prominent should she draw in having just missed in turf sprint debut at Toronto to good Rose of Killarney and being out of the wonderful turf route mare (Gr. I QEII Challenge winner) Collect the Cash; Of those debuting, Pletcher's #8 Sage Chapel is sod-bred and has a full sister whose lone start was a grass win (71 BSF); #5 Play the Favorite is a full to breeder-owner's own Man Among Men (4/3-0-0 on lawn, $113k), who won the turf mile Pinjara at 2 and Sham at 3; #7 Eluding from capable Helen Pitts exits dam that banked $233k from 22/7-2-3 grass record and whose half bother (Primitive Hall) was 2nd in Cigar's first Donn H. victory; ALSO.. #4 Distorted Lady (other Pletcher signed on) has worked well for bow but no turf heritage, and 2nd Frank Brothers entrant #11 Fall Shuffle SCR bulleted on Boynton grass for return lawn try..

SCR ADD: 4

Best Value: #1 SCR
Most Likely: #14 SCR
Next Best: #6 Tessitura 7-2
Exotics Add: #5 Play the Favorite 12-1

8th: ALW/N1X, 3yo-F, 6f (DD, Super)

Kenneally, hottest conditioner on grounds, sends pair here: #1 Carolina Belle (first North America) and #5 Grand Obsession, who has outrun her pedigree..

Best Value: #2 American Asset 4-1
Most Likely: #5 Grand Obsession 3-1 3rd
Next Best: #4 Be Fruitful 2-1 2nd

9th: CLM/N2L, 4+, 8.5f-T (Super)

A typically well-matched collection of N2L what-not to conclude what could be a juicy Quad; #8 Storming Sea from Brothers makes turf debut with zero family history to utilize coming from unraced dam and with unraced sibs; #6 Stalwart Woodsman seems 'fast enough', but hasn't seen a blade of grass since last February and his pedigree-mates are a collective 19/0-3-3 on loam..

SCR ADDS: 6-13

Best Value: #7 Blithe Lad 10-1
Most Likely: #4 SCR
Next Best: #10 SCR
Exotics Add: #8 Storming Sea 6-1

Revised <$50 P4 Play:

6: 1-4-8
7: 4-6-7-14/SCR
8: 5
9: 6-7-8-13

3x3x1x4 = $36

Good luck!
Steve

A few horses that I am looking at today:
Stealin Kisses (3rd) would have won the race if it was 1.5 furlongs, lol
Pago Island (5th) scr
Forest Trail (7th)
GRAND OBSESSION (8th)

Best of luck to those playing today!

Good call on Forest Trail. How she was 5-1 will remain a mystery to me forever. When it came off the turf I honestly thought she would be 8:5.

Hope you bet.

At first I thought Steve had misspelled the word "lawn". But then I realized that didn't make any sense. So I looked it up:

Soil is composed of many particles of varying sizes. Soil scientists have classified soil particles into three major groups: sand, silt and clay. Sand particles are the largest and tend to hold little water but allow good aeration. Clay particles are very small in size and tend to pack down so that water does not drain well and little or no air can penetrate. Silt particles are medium sized and have properties in between those of sand and clay.

A loamy soil, then, is one that combines all three of these types of particles in relatively equal amounts. Loamy soil is ideal for most garden plants because it holds plenty of moisture but also drains well so that sufficient air can reach the roots

Seth...with your user name being GOLFER, you should know what loam is without looking it up. Its the best type of soil imaginable to grow most golf course grasses on

Kevin, I hack up the turf, I don't grow it! I carry the divot-filling sand by the barrel when I'm out on the course.
