Tomcito !!!
working like a true monster beast at keenland, dam....
Tuesday morning, Tomcito sharpened for the race by working three furlongs from the gate in 34.60 seconds over the Keeneland Polytrack. "I think I have the horse to beat," Zanelli said. "He is getting better and better, and he is not even blowing" after the work. |

the trainer comments aside, I think this horse could very well figure prominently. he is one of the few that you know will be fine with the distance and will not be backing up. only one race this year and it wasn't overwhelming by any means but he might have needed that one. He had a solid foundation last year including 10 and 12 furlongs, could be a logical one to use as an exotics key.

Most importantly, he has a three syllable name. How many "t" horses have won the Derby in the last, say, 20 years? Thunder Gulch (also three syllables)?

Street Sense broke a streak of six straight three syllable winners of the Derby.

Maybe he's another polytrack lover that can win the Lexington, but he's not Derby material.

Why do you say that? The horse has raced exclusively on the real stuff throughout his career - and won.

There were a couple of babies who worked a 1/4 over the polytrack at KEE in 20 2/5th seconds.
For very short distances - that surface is insanely fast compared to dirt. The longer they go - the much, much, much slower they go. |

and yes he raced in Peru, but he was winning by some pretty gaudy margins. he might fit in very well with this rather undistinguished group we have this year. |

I think that's a bit harsh, Hossy. A claimer? Are the nine or so horses who finished in arrears of Tomcito in the Florida Derby all claimers as well? Hey Byrn? Fierce Wind?
