when i was in college i had a part time job picking up medical specimens from doctors offices for a diagnostic laboratory.

most of the time my route was in orange county but every now and then someone would call in sick and they'd have to switch things around. one of those times i got the inglewood/south central l.a. route. i was so happy.

this was the winter, it got dark early, and i didn't know the route. i was using a thomas guide to find where i needed to go. i had morning classes and went to work around 2pm. it was supposed to take 3.5 or 4 hours if you knew the route. it was taking me longer

now most doctors offices are on main streets and you aren't going to find any trouble even if you're a skinny white kid in largely african-american and hispanic neighborhoods. the chances are nothing happens. but still, i was nervous.

you had to call in occasionally on the route to see if any of the offices you have already visited needed a "stat" p/u for a patient that came in later.

i'm old so when i was in college there were no cell phones. i had to find a phone booth and drop some change in to call the office.

it was while i'm making this call that there's a commotion. i tell the dispatcher, "holy crap! there a 300 lb naked black woman walking down the street! she's coming straight toward me!" this woman is covered in blood and what looks like feces, she's cursing and screaming in this singsong accent and i tell the guy, "i think she's from that island in the caribbean. you know, the one with bob marley and all the dope and stuff".

he says "jamaica?"






















































and i say "hell no!, i wouldn't even kiss her!
