Default Matt Cain...

might have just pitched the most brutal 1-hitter in MLB history. The only hit he allowed cost him a perfect game and it came off of the bat of the goddamn pitcher, a career .069 hitter.

Nice performance but it was against the Pirates. They have scored like 10 runs all season.

A one hitter is a one hitter regardless who they are playing. They are still major leaguers.

Not even close...

There are a bunch of no hitters lost with 2 out in the 9th inning including several perfect games. In 1988 it happened to Dave Steib 2 games in a row!

Wow -- that is pretty brutal about Steib.

Considering that MLB teams all play a 784-game schedule ... I guess it's not hard to find a lot of crazy borderline impossible stuff because of the sheer volume of games that get played.

If you pitched -- what would annoy you more after the game -- throwing a 1-hit would be perfect game that was broken up by 0.69 hitter or losing it on the last out?

I remember Mike Mussina losing a perfect game at Fenway on the 9th with 2 outs and 2 strikes on Carl Everett.

I'm sure Cain wishes he had gotten the pitcher out but losing it when you are 1 out away is tough, really tough because you are so close and everyone knows it. In the 4th inning no one is paying attention. It is why closers make so much money to get 3 outs, because it is the end of the game.

I'm not diminishing his accomplishment but you use the term major league hitter very loosely.

Cain did something freaky again ... he wasted a scoreless 10-inning performance from Cliff Lee.

Imagine pitching 10-scoreless innings and your team losing.

Cain gave up just 2-hits and a walk in 9 shoutout innings and didn't get a decision.

He only threw 91 pitches...
