My uncle was mounted police for 30 years and I loved his stories about his equine partners. He had one, Seven (named for the numeral shaped stripe on his head), who was a former race horse. He remembered doing a parade at PARX when Seven was well into his 20s, and the moment Seven stepped onto the track, his eyes and his nostrils got as big as saucers and my uncle (no slouch as an equestrian) said it was all he could do to keep him to a walk. He was sure he was ready to take off and run his best five furlongs.

I wish police units would take some of the money they get for military grade equipment and put it into equine units. They really do a lot for improving perception of the cops. The mounted police here in NYC spend a lot of time posing for pictures and letting people pet their mounts, and I think it's a good thing for breeding good feelings between citizens and cops.
