What can I say about a man for whom even the adjective "legendary" feels inadequate? Having only read about him and listened to him, I am envious of those of you who truly knew him. His was a life well lived. Bravo, Mr. Nerud.

A great piece the NY Times blog The Rail did with him when he was 100.
http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/201...eaming-at-100/ Check out his comments on Secretariat. Still firm in his feeling of, "Eh, I've seen better." And of course his comments on Dr Fager, too.

What an extraordinary life! I recall reading about his purchase of a yearling at the age of about 97. When someone asked him about the purchase he replied (I paraphrase) "I guess I'm an optimist..."
RIP, Mr, Nerud.
