What can I say about a man for whom even the adjective "legendary" feels inadequate? Having only read about him and listened to him, I am envious of those of you who truly knew him. His was a life well lived. Bravo, Mr. Nerud.

Bloodhorse | Steve Haskin > The Legacy of John Nerud
Quote:
When a 102-year-old person dies it shouldn’t come as a shock. But John Nerud was no ordinary person, and it is still difficult to believe he is gone. Although his body steadily deteriorated over the past couple of years, his mind refused to follow and he still was looking for ways to improve the sport, NYRA, and the Breeders’ Cup right up until his final breath.

Tartan Farm Started a Graveyard of Champions(Which is now Winding Oaks Farm), its at the highest Point of the Farm and has been Meticulously taken care of for years, its the Final Resting Point for Dr Fager, Ta Wee and Dr Patches. There are several other's too but can't Remember of the top of my Head.

A great piece the NY Times blog The Rail did with him when he was 100.

http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/201...eaming-at-100/

Check out his comments on Secretariat. Still firm in his feeling of, "Eh, I've seen better." And of course his comments on Dr Fager, too.

What an extraordinary life! I recall reading about his purchase of a yearling at the age of about 97. When someone asked him about the purchase he replied (I paraphrase) "I guess I'm an optimist..."

RIP, Mr, Nerud.
