Injuries, Retirements piling up: Bayern, Take Chg Brandi, Jess's Dream
Embellish the Lace to miss BC with injury; will be offered at Fasig-Tipton
Dave Grening, DRF Live EMBELLISH THE LACE, the Grade 1 Alabama winner, came out of her fifth-place finish in last Saturday's Grade 1 Cotillion with an injury and will not be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Instead she will be offered at the Fasig-Tipton in November, according to trainer Tony Dutrow. "She has an injury that can keep her out of the Breeders' Cup," said Dutrow, who declined to disclose the injury. "She could be rehabbed and brought back to the races but [owner Alex Lieblong] has chosen not to do that." Embellish the Lace, a daughter of Super Saver who was a $320,000 yearling purchase out of the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale, won 3 of 6 races and earned $441,540. Ironicus injured, will miss Breeders' Cup Dave Grening, DRF Live IRONICUS, who set a course record winning the Bernard Baruch at Saratoga on Sept. 7, has a fracture in the cannon bone of his right foreleg and is out for the year, trainer Shug McGaughey said Thursday. Ironicus was being pointed to the Breeders' Cup Mile. McGaughey said Ironicus would have a screw inserted to repair the fracture and the prognosis is for a return to racing in 2016. In winning the Bernard Baruch, Ironicus ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:38.54, eclipsing the 24-year-old mark of 1:38.54 set by FOURSTARDAVE.

It's scary how brittle Tony Dutrow-trained horses are. Who was the last horse that got through anything that could reasonably be called a campaign with him?

That was over 5 years ago. On the bright side, at least Ironicus's broken leg is only "minor" according to the article. |

Bayern retired, goes to Hill n Dale
Jay Privman Bayern has been retired, owner Kaleem Shah just informed me in a text, saying "Bayern has given my family memories of a lifetime and I am grateful for that." Bayern, by Offlee Wild, goes to stud beginning next spring at Hill n Dale Farm in Kentucky. He had a sensational 2014 campaign, highlighted by a win in the Breeders' Cup Classic, but was winless in five starts this year. He was third today in the Awesome Again.

Wishing him a great career as a stud...he looked like he had lost his drive and determination in the stretch yesterday. He would have smoked this field in 2014 with that setup in the AA.....happy retirement Bayern

Liked Bayern last year, if for nothing else other than beating California Chrome and his connections twice late in the year.
He was obviously a different horse when he himself returned from a layoff this year. Hoping he does well in the shed.

Take Charge Brandi retired
DRF Breeding Staff Take Charge Brandi, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2014, has been retired from racing and will reside at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, Ky., until the decision is made to keep her to breed or offer her at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The 3-year-old daughter of Giant’s Causeway finished her on-track career with five wins in 11 starts and earnings of $1,692,126. She was trained by D. Wayne Lukas for owner Willis Horton. “She was a great champion and we just ran out of time making the Breeders' Cup again,” Horton said, “She owns the best pedigree in the stud book and loved to win races.” A $435,000 yearling purchase by Horton, Take Charge Brandi won her debut start at Churchill Downs, then followed up with a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Schulyerville Stakes at Saratoga. A run of three straight off-the-board finishes by double-digit lengths helped send her to post at odds of 61.70-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, which she led all the way and won by a half-length. Take Charge Brandi then found her stride, winning the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes and the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes to clinch champion 2-year-old filly honors. She debuted at 3 with a win in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn, and was scheduled to face males in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes there, but a non-displaced bone chip in her right knee put her on the shelf until summer. The filly made her return in August in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga. She set the pace for the opening half-mile before fading to last of 10. Her final start came in the Grade 1 Cotilion Stakes at Parx, where she was eased through the stretch. "You hate to see a champion retire, but it was the right thing to do," Lukas said. "This family has been so good to me and Willis Horton. Take Charge Brandi was supremely talented and determined. “I almost ran her in the Los Alamitos Futurity the week after the Starlet, and think she would have been very tough to beat. She reminds me of Serena's Song in her determination and natural ability. She is the complete package and has everything you look for in a great broodmare prospect." Bred in Kentucky by the Charming Syndicate, Take Charge Brandi is out of the winning Seeking the Gold mare Charming, whose two foals to race are winners. Horton purchased the third foal out of the mare, the War Front filly Take Charge Tressa, for $1.25 million at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale. Her second dam is multiple Grade 1 winner and 2013 Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, whose foals include the Horton-owned champion and stallion Will Take Charge, as well as Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy.

Jess’s Dream sidelined for year
By David Grening ELMONT, N.Y. – Jess’s Dream, the first foal out of Rachel Alexandra who was dynamic in rallying from far back to win his debut at Saratoga, is sidelined for the remainder of the year, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. McLaughlin said Jess’s Dream developed a problem in his right hind leg and is nearly halfway through a 60-day break at Stonestreet Farm in Lexington, Ky. McLaughlin said that in 30 days, Jess’s Dream will move to Stonestreet’s farm in Ocala, Fla., where he will stay for an undetermined period of time before moving back to McLaughlin at Palm Meadows in Florida. Jess’s Dream, by Curlin, rallied from at least 18 lengths out of it to win his debut going 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga on Aug. 24. He earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure.
