Default A case of 'the slows' for '16 sophomores..

Expansion of discussion in the Weekend Beyers thread..

Here's a link to the Top 25 Derby candidates last year coming up to the race to help compare how the Class of '16 is faring fig-wise through mid-January: http://static.drf.com/images/2015_Derbyprobs.pdf

There are some isolated players that have run 90+ (only 2 this year so far), but overall.. Yeesh. Just out of the Derby 25 last year, Intl Star, Dortmund, Carpe Diem, American Pharoah, El Kabeir, Upstart, Firing Line, Mr. Z, Ocho Ocho Ocho, (plus Texas Red, Calculator & Daredevil) had all run 90+ by now..

Mohaymen 95 (Remsen)
Flexibility 91, 93 (Jerome, Remsen)
Ralis 93 (Hopeful)
Gift Box 93 (MSW)
Exaggerator 92 (DeD Jackpot)
Frank Conversation 91 (Cal Derby) - Synthetic

Didn't Gift Box when he broke his maiden? (Granted that was a maiden race in the slop so you can't take a ton from that.)

Thanks in advance.

This is not isolated to just three year old races this year.

Horses on the Beyere figures are much slower than they had been. Performance enhancing drugs are not performance enhancing in terms of Beyere figures I suppose.

Scale has slipped due to several factors including that the tentpole 5000 claimer baseline has moved. Due to slots purses, better horses are running at that level which pulls down the top end.

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...talks-breeding

i was reading the above article, and it brought to mind this thread. because what she is talking about here is one of the reasons why horses aren't getting faster-and may well be getting slower.
ok, not one of the reasons. THE reason. used to be that breeders bred to make a better breed, that is no longer the case. now, it is how quickly can i get a big, fast ROI. the breed and its future are no longer a concern, just like for many in the corporate world, the future is now. what i want is now now now, to heck with down the road and what the consequences will be, i just need to make mine NOW.
and the horse will pay, and then the sport as a whole will pay.
