Venue for January 12
My friends, I thought that I should explain the reasons why I selected this Saturday's venue. First of all, I couldn't find any races that had Derby prep points. I know that will begin in earnest very soon, and may influence where we play, but not this Saturday. Next, I didn't want to play Santa Anita three weeks in a row. I ruled out Gulfstream because I suspect that we will be visiting there quite a bit in the upcoming weeks. I eliminated tracks in the Northern part of the country to reduce the chances of adverse weather (I happened to look in at the race feed from Mahoning Valley earlier this afternoon and saw very heavy snow falling). Having ruled out a large number of possible choices, I decided to choose a track that we haven't visited just for variety, and hopefully for the fun of it. If my idea of a good time differs from yours, well, I'm sorry.
Having said all of that, we are going to Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Arizona. On Saturday they will have an 8 race card with first post at 12:40 PM Mountain time (1:40 Central and 2:40 Eastern). The races run the gamut from the $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile on the turf , the $30,000 Glendale Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, to a couple of bottom of the barrel $3,000 claiming races. Here's a link to the track website: http://www.turfparadise.com/ The entries have already been posted at Equibase. Hope everyone takes this in the spirit it is offered and that all have a fun time. |

I thought I might have a bit of trouble locating free PPs for these races, but I didn't. All were on horse-races.net. Here is where I found them on that site:
R1 Darley Stables(Sire Discreet Cat) R2 R3 Winstar Farms (Sire Pioneer of the Nile) R4 Vinery Stable(Sire Congrats) R5 Spendthrift(another Paddy O'Prado) R6 Darley(Midshipman) R7 Darley(Elusive Quality) R8 Ballena Vista Farm(Sire Dixie Chatter) For you people, not like me, that are still working, hope this helps. or even if, you are like me. Sorry, there was one I didn't find and that was R2. I misread Turfway for Turf Paradise. Last edited by cal828 : 01-09-2019 at 09:04 PM. |

The last time we played Turf Paradise (yes indeed we have) was Feb.15th 2014. A good time was had by all with NJ Stinks running away with the Turf Paradise ROI. Unfortunately I don't know who won the Points Contest. A nice compact 8 race card will give us a break before the serious 3 year old racing starts and before the Pegasus in two weeks. I'm all in for your choice Joly.

I guess, theoretically, handicapping is handicapping, whatever the venue. I tried my luck once with Turf Paradise while in Vegas and didn't do so well, but don't know how many years ago that was and maybe, hopefully, I'm a little better than I was then. If my wallet could talk, it would probably say that's a lie.

We haven't seen the joint in 5 years, what little we knew about it, we forgot, anyway. I'm all for it.😉
