![]() What a crazy up and down year. Earlier in the year, I thought Roamin would win the overall contest, but there was too much time left. Then I thought Plenilune would win. Then Indian Hemp. Now Ruffian and surely she will win with so little time left, but who knows, maybe one of those others will have a giant Breeder's Cup? Interesting to watch, even for us cellar dwellers.

![]() It is very interesting to watch the leaderboard constantly change. It goes to show how hard it is to make a profit over 50 weeks and yet most years a few of our players do. Don't have the totals handy but you still need at least $5000 to show a profit and a $2000 + hit really helps. And Ruff usually gets 5 or 6 good ones during the year. Maybe not that big but substantial.

![]() Well, I never thought about it in those terms, but I see what you are saying $100 x 50=$5k. Not rooting for her to lose, but I am guessing that she is probably not the only one in the black so should be a competitive contest right up until the end and good luck to all from one who is most likely to be just an innocent bystander or what's that word? A kibitzer.

![]() Yesterday's results certainly showed the sometimes wild divergences between the morning line odds and the actual odds. Ruff's winning pick of Hollywood Talent was 20-1 in the ML and yet went off at an eye popping 108-1! Amazingly, he was not the longest shot in this 9 horse field - the last two runners both were 170-1 and ran like it.
I happened to make a no-brainer win pick of Jackie's Warrior in the next race. Jackie was 4-5 in the ML but was crushed to about 1-20 in the win pool - may have been even less than that but they don't go any lower. I have to wonder whether either of us would have made the plays that we did if we were looking at the infield tote with two minutes to post. I probably would have said that Jackie was by far the most likely winner but an insane bet at those odds and either passed the race or looked to a bet other than win. I just don't know what a bettor would do when seeing a horse that they had considered at 20-1 on the board at 99-1. Would that horseplayer have run to the windows and gotten the bet down or said at those odds there must be a reason why they are so high and looked elsewhere. Interesting to consider. |

![]() I think Ruff's horse was a 10 year old. I probably would have eliminated him for that reason alone. Not often you see one that old win a stakes or maybe any other race. I did see one at Oaklawn win a stakes. Can't remember, but think he was at least 10 and maybe 11. What's that old saying? Snow on the roof and fire in the furnace. I think Ruff's horse obviously, still had some fire.
