Default It will be Oaklawn this Saturday . . .

The $1.25 million Derby was too much to pass up for Indian Hemp, so we're back at Cal's home track again . Threads will be up later today.

It is a shame to miss the Florida Derby, but at least we might be able to see the filly beat the boys, if that is any consolation. I was there at Oaklawn the last time that happened, but I seemed to be the only person in the crowd that didn't know that was going to happen. What a difference 10 days on the calendar can make. Can remember that day well. It was absolutely hot and a little uncomfortable standing in the crowd next to the rail. This morning it was 32 degrees. I almost put my house plants out on my deck yesterday. They were looking a little sickly after being inside all winter, but that likely would have been the end of them which would have been a shame. I've had one of them, a lacy leaf Philodendron for more than 40 years. Don't know how it has survived my black thumb. Probably no credit to me. Just a very hardy plant.

I was Dumbstruck seeing Oaklawn NOT Gulfstream! 😱

In fact, I was so sure of that, I even posted in MY TBRF Contest

O Well 😢
That’s What I Get For Not Winning 🏆 Points Instead Of ROI 😔

I believe that Cal's reference is to a filly much earlier than that - possibly the great Althea, also trained by D. Wayne. They remember things like that in a racing town like Hot Springs.

Althea, the champion 2-year-old filly of 1983, today became the first filly to win the Arkansas Derby, scoring an impressive five-length victory while equaling the track record for a mile and an eighth at Oaklawn Park.

Ridden by Pat Valenzuela, Althea tied the record of 1:46 4/5
set 24 hours earlier by Wild Again in the Oaklawn Handicap.

Right it was Althea. I didn't bet her that day. I bet Gate Dancer. I said the race occurred 10 days later than this year's edition which makes no sense. 7 days, I think. I misremember a lot of things at my advanced age, but I do remember that it was sunny and very warm that day. Perfect day for racing which looks like what we are about to get on Saturday.

I really don't do that much for it other than water it. Put it out on my deck this time of year and retrieve it into the house when the weather turns cold. I guess it must be a tropical or sub-tropical plant because it thrives in the hot summer time and puts on a lot of new leaves. You would think a lot of creepy crawlies would munch down on it, but they generally don't. I am amazed at its longevity. Had no idea a house plant could live so long, especially considering my ability to assassinate plants.
