Point Given Dead

"I'm saddened to hear of Point Given's passing," said retired jockey Gary Stevens, who was aboard for all of Point Given's starts in 2001. "He was, to me, the greatest horse to not win the Triple Crown. It was an honor to ride such a phenomenal horse. Rest in peace, PG."

If the above bolded quote is true (it's not), a lot of the credit for that designation has to be given to Gary Stevens himself.

Masterful early move...5-wide no less...into the teeth of a :44+/1:09+ pace, one of the fastest in Derby history.

I would think he was speaking of those that participated in the series and won two of the races. Over Point Given, I'd have Smarty Jones, Sunday Silence, Risen Star, and Alysheba.

Well he would be of the horses that ran in all three races. Literally the only reason Man O' War isn't a Triple Crown winner is Sam Riddle was a snob about KY racing at the time and went 'eh kinda early for 1 1/4' as an excuse (that he didn't care about by the time War Admiral was there to take a crack at the now established TC). but MOW wouldn't have lost. He just wouldn't have. Print it in the paper and have 'em ready to distribute. It's over. It took a screwy starter/conditions/interference at the break to beat him at 2. The most definite TC to ever TC only stopped because MOW took the day off.
