![]() Kent D.seems pretty confident:
The Stormy Atlantic colt had his final Derby prep at Hollywood Park Sunday morning, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.80, and trainer Bill Currin labeled the move “the most perfect work he’s ever had.” Currin, part-owner of Stormello with Alvin Eisman, was ecstatic about the workout, his exuberance matched by that of jockey Kent Desormeaux, who flew out to California to exercise his Derby mount. “Kent got off the horse all bubbling over,” the trainer said, “really pumped up. There were some media people watching the work and Kent told them, ‘He will win the Kentucky Derby.’ They asked me how I felt, and I said ‘My jockey said it all for me.’” Currin said today’s work was designed to teach Stormello a few lessons about rating behind horses and moving at the opportune time. “I wanted to slow him down a little,” Currin said, “because I didn’t want him working :57 and change, like he’s done before. I wanted him to go at a good pace, but to get some schooling behind horses, on the rail and out in the middle of the track. “Kent handled it perfectly. He was four or five lengths behind his workmate (the Currin-trained Eyesalrite) and on the inside for a quarter. Then Kent moved him to the outside, and Stormello took off, and kept going well past the wire. I got him the final eighth in 11 flat. Eyesalrite is a nice horse, but he’s no Stormello.” Stormello’s move was eighth-best of 56 drills at the distance, while Eyesalrite was timed the five-eighths in 1:02. The colt is scheduled to leave Hollywood Park at 5 a.m. Monday for a flight to Churchill Downs. The trainer will arrive later in the day. Stormello, winner of the Hollywood Futurity in his final start as a 2-year-old, has run twice at Gulfstream Park this year, finishing second (beaten a nose by Scat Daddy) in the Fountain of Youth, and fourth in the Florida Derby. |

![]() Only one of numerous hyperbolic statements we are likely to hear this week.
How many workouts will be "the best I've ever seen"? Someone should make a list of them. |

![]() It is reminiscent of what Howard Cosell used to do when he was the broadcaster of the Derby. During Derby week he would visit every trainer and tell each of them that they were going to win the Derby. That way, no matter who won, during the post-race interview he could say " I told you that you would win this Derby."

![]() This chatter about Stormello is probably as solid as what they said yesterday at Hollywood. On TVG they had mics on Currin and Desormeaux before the ninth race. They were both gushing about how great Freesgood was going to run, Kent was saying he would win, Currin was saying that they were going to make some money, blah, blah, blah. I was skeptical because I didn't think Freesgood was a router. Result? dead last finish. never a factor.

It's just amazing the disinformation that TV hosts seem to think it is necessary to spew. |

After the race where Nick Hines horse was nosed for the win, Hines broke down sobbing while being interviewed. Todd Schrupp followed up that interview by taking a shot at message boards and the people who spend all day on them. Apparently Nick Hines must have been ridiculed on some message board. but it just irritates me when they do that. Its been more than one occaison when they go off on message boards like the people that frequent them are all a bunch of loser freaks. They are coming across as desparate. |

I played C.T. Zee, Nick Hine's horse. I had him on top in tris and supers. I was sobbing right along with Nick after the order of finish was posted. ![]() Sadly I did not use his horse for second. |

I loved TVG's coverage of the Derby with The Works and their great Derby pre-show Friday Night. But cut it out with woe is me act on the air and all the bravado about being the best, blah blah blah. The highlight may have been when Ken Rudolph (either on his own or more likely directed by a producer) referred to the Derby as "the big race this upcoming weekend." Geez. </rant, thread hijack> |
