Default A Few Thoughts About Betting Saratoga

Another year went by that I did not make it up there but that did not curb my enthusiasm every chance I had to watch and wager on this meet. Their were some days that I awoke like a kid at Christmas waiting to get to the track to sit in front of a TV screen at noon eastern and hear Tom Durkin say "at The Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" . Then it was on to Talkin Horses taking notes on what Jason and Andy had to say during their breakdown of each race. Ok now it is 12:30, a half hour till post time.

I lost almost every day I wagered on this meet. Not one day did I make money, a handfull I broke even or came close. Funny thing is, I don't really feel bad about it. I relished the chance to watch and wager on the best horses at the best meet day in and out. I was chatting with one of my buddies from the track and he said it best, "Every one of them horses are good up there, thats why its hard". I went into each day with the mindset of I am thankful to be in a postion to wager some money on these fine animals at this meet.

A question for the Veterans. How much emphasis do you put on Trainer / Jock combos at Saratoga? In addition, what about a Maiden that shows works only at Toga and they are spaced evenly, is this an angle to use?

Overall financially it was a mess for me but I don't regret it one bit. Whats not to love about betting a track with beautiful women in the background, a festival type atmosphere even on a Monday or Thursday when there is no Holiday and races filled with quality not quanity.

Special thanks to all those on this board with there "behind the scenes" posts and all their hard work just to share their experience with us.

It may be hard to wager on the races, but I can guarantee you the best value you'll ever find on the good horses up there. If the horse is 4-1 at the Spa in a decent allowance race, it'd likely be 4-5 at Delaware Park or Aquaduct or wherever. Relish the value and the experience.
