Arkansas Derby winner Lawyer Ron among potential Super Derby starters

Arkansas Derby (G2) winner Lawyer Ron is expected to make his next start in the $500,000 Super Derby (G2) at Louisiana Downs on September 23.

The 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-olds is the marquee race at the Bossier City, Louisiana, track.

In his first start back after a 12th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 6, Lawyer Ron held off runner-up Smokeyjonessutton by three-quarters of a length on Saturday to win the inaugural $250,000 St. Louis Derby at Fairmount Park.

The chestnut Langfuhr colt, a six-time stakes winner trained by Bob Holthus, underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his right hind ankle after the Kentucky Derby.

Smokeyjonessutton is also being considered for the Super Derby as are Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Brother Derek, Dwyer Stakes (G2) winner Strong Contender, Ohio Derby (G2) winner Deputy Glitters, Grade 2-placed winner Flashy Bull, and Louisiana-bred four-time stakes winner Costa Rising.

I would love to see Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron go head to head. If one takes the lead the other will push. Early fast fractions could set the race up for a bomb. It is going to be a pretty hard race to handicap because BD and LR can both lead and rate. Pace is DEFINITELY going to make this race. Also, it is hard to tell which is the better horse in this particular spot because BD had a horrible trip in both the Preakness and the Derby. Meanwhile, LR didn't fire in the Derby, but just ran a very impressive St. Louis Derby with a nice 103 Beyer off of the layoff. He will only improve off of that start. It is 1 1/8 miles which is probably a better distance for LR. Still, BD is probably more talented though. We'll know more from the El Cajon Stakes this weekend. If they both go, it'll be a fun race to play and a good matchup. After I handicap the race, if I don't see a price horse that can upset either one of the two, I guess I'll settle on the one that has the higher odds.

Should be a nice race, the Super Derby appeared on it's way to becoming a very important late season three year old test with a purse of a cool million a few years back (I think they were considering doubling that in fact) but it seems to have lacked appeal for the big horses recently...probably cause the best three year olds are ready by now to challenge older horses!

They used the excuse or the Texas compition for the racing dollar, thus the reduction of the purse. The continued the whinning untill they got slots legalized,which was suppose to increase purses. Have we heard of any plans to increase the purse of Lads signature event? This helps disprove the theory that "slots " improve racing. All slots do is give casinos more patron with no concern for the racing.

Brother Derek will not be running in the Super Derby. They plan on running him in the Goodwood at Santa Anita against older horses.

In 1989, DeBartolo said he would double the Super Derby purse (to two million dollars) in the event that both Sunday Silence and Easy Goer would show up. The race was run for one million, as Sunday Silence was the only who showed up (won by six lengths).

Back then, the Super Derby was 10F, not sure when it was shortened to 9F.

Essence of Dubai won this race a few years ago. Money is not a question for the royal family of Dubai, so what about Jazil(if ready) in here?

jazil just got back to the barn....they're hoping to get him to the bcc, a long shot imo. don't look for him to run for about a month, a prep and the bcc--they claim he's not too out of shape, that they haven't lost much time with him. we'll see.
