![]() I'm shocked that Steve picked Smooth Air.
I thought there was a Grade 1 with his name on it.....and being that this was merely a Grade 2 I just assumed it was a prep.

![]() Steve, it's probably a moot point but I disagree that soft ground moves Proudinsky down. He won last year's Muniz over yielding turf and German horses often are used to boggy courses. I think he runs well in California despite the surface, not because of it. With that said, I don't want any part of him from the 14-hole.

![]() I love Steve's picks in the LA Derby, an abundance of alternatives here to the favorites.

Bennie is still working on the colt and he came into the race in perfect shape. Susie, his exersize rider, says he continues to improve and was particularly good getting ready for this while the Calder surface was tightened up for the breeze show. I thought Paco Lopez gave him an excellent and patient ride. Nunez kept coming out on him with Finallymadeit down the stretch too, and Smooth Air just kept to the task. Came back for the photo and wasn't breathing hard at all. He's a helluva nice little horse and is now 14/6-3-3 for $930,000, with the Derby and BCC the lone OTB finishes and 3 Gr. II wins. Met Mile the target. Enjoyed being in the party yesterday with the Burns Family, Bennie and Diane, the great Salty Roberts and the rest of the happy team.
