Default Deja Vu all over again

I apologize in advance if this has already been posted or mentioned, as I have not been following closely all the BP/Oil disaster threads, but.....

THE SAME FRICKIN THING HAPPENED IN 1979! How did they deal with it then? What were the results of their containment efforts?

Watch for yourself:

That one was probably Bush's fault too.

So 30 years ago we had essentially the same thing happen and yet virtually noone recalls it happening? Does this mean that the ecological damage that is supposedly going to take "hundreds of years" to recover from is being overblown? I mean I don't see any of the oldtimers down there being interviewed saying this is the worst spill since 79. It seems like no one even remembers it.

Monday-Tuesday, in the Congressional hearings, the CEO's of five oil companies stood before congress, and when Ixtoc was spelled and mentioned, all five shook their heads in lack of recognition. It was pathetic, and appalling. Ignorance doesn't mean it never happened.

I read about that spill a few weeks ago, there was in article in the Philly Inquire I believe.

It was gigantic - as big or bigger than what we have right now (though we dont really KNOW what we have right now, cause the number keep getting higher and higher!).

According to the newspaper article, if I remember correctly, is that hurricanes actually really helped the spill.. and it dispursed & diluted the oil throughout the water to where it much of a problem from this enormous spill.

I was 15 at the time, and don't have any recollection of it at all. But there was no internet (and cable tv was in it's infancy).

Actually, its Obama's fault. I wonder if they do the whole "drill baby drill" bit (pun intended) at the next RNC.

Or they can always take the Democratic position and lament that engines designed to run on gasoline are "addicted to oil".

I think that the CEO's of drilling oil companies would know about one of the largest oil spills in history, and how it was dealt with, and that clean up methods haven't changed much in all that time, yes.

Kinda like I expect Obama to be vaguely familiar with World War I?*

* But not Caribou Barbie. She's still figuring out Africa isn't a country.

i think the most important thing is that the company know the best way to clean it up, etc. of course we learn from our past, and no doubt that's how they have figured out the best way to provide safety checks, etc. but i don't know that it's the ceo's job to know all about all that-i think it's his job to have the people in place to know that. but i see your point. not sure tho about the comparison to ww1. a more likely comparison would be for obama to know all the specifics about the huge san francisco earthquake and all the details on how it was handled-and i doubt he does. but maybe/hopefully fema does.

'Zig, the point was that these CEO's didn't even know that spill existed

To a man, they didn't even know it happened.

So what? They are the CEO's of oil companies, in front of Congress regarding the biggest oil spill ever, and they didn't even look at the crib notes? They sit there say, "oil spill? Before? really?"

It's not exactly the forum where you want to be completely forthcoming. Of course lets disregard that fact and continue to be naive for the save of feigning outrage. Becuz dats funner.
