Default Opinion Question: Who was the better Sire Seattle Slew Or Alydar?

Seattle Slew or Alydar - Who was the better sire?

Seattle Slew did live longer and Sire more horses but Alydar sired a heck of alot of good horses in his short life. If he had lived longer perhaps he would have sired a triple crown winner (he came close with Alysheba and Easy Goer).

Who was the better sire?

AP Indy is a good point. A son of Seattle Slew.

How many sons of Alydar became top sires?

Alydar was a much better broodmare sire than sire of sires.

I don't know how many here were adults and regular track attenders when Seattle Slew was running.

I made his Preakness and had 2nd row seats near the finish line in the grandstand for his Belmont.

I heard many times that New York day, "he may be undefeated, but he's no Forego

Truth is that even I bought a little into the hype in his Triple Crown season that maybe he just was born in the right crop of three year olds. Heck, I had been spoiled by Secretariat four years earlier.

That's why I so love that Seattle Slew became a top sire.

It was his proof of greatness to his doubters.

Sure hard for me to diss Alydar though.

The question appears to be a no-brainer but after looking at the top race horses each sired if you took away one horse it becomes very close. As a sire of top of the line race horses I would give a slight edge to Alydar.

Who was the better sire, Bold Ruler or Native Dancer ? Which sire has had a bigger impact on the breed ? Bold Ruler is one son away from having little lasting impact and Native Dancer is a son and a daughter away from being a dismal failure.

Back to the original post if I was to add Gone West into the equation which of the three would be considered the better sire ?

Raise a Native was no slouch.

Same crop as ND too.

Looking at the progeny, ALTHEA (Alydar/Courtly Dee) jumps out as a filly that doesn't seem as appreciated as she might be...

no, he wasn't. an excellent sire. but when you look at the effect northern dancer and his sons have had world wide, it's amazing. and with the book size he had...danzig carried on his legacy, also with covering only about 50 mares at the most.

hard to judge alydar tho, since he had a much shorter career than slew. of course no one expected much of slew with his less than stellar pedigree. he didn't just rise above it on the track, but in the shed as well.
