Tampa Bay Derby Hero Odysseus Euthanized
Posted: 12:42 PM ET

Padua Stables's Odysseus (c, 3, Malibu Moon--Persimmon Hill, by Conquistador Cielo), a game winner of the GIII Tampa Bay Derby earlier this spring, was euthanized due to complications of laminitis Monday. The "TDN Rising Star" was receiving treatment for colitis at Haygard Equine. "Our family is deeply saddened by the loss of Odysseus," owner Satish Sanan said. "He gave us thrills as a racehorse and it is a big loss for us not to see him fulfill his racing potential." The $250,000 OBSMAR graduate was knocked off the Triple Crown trail after hyper extending his knee when ninth in the GI Blue Grass S. at Keeneland Apr. 10. Odysseus, bred in Kentucky by Haymarket Farm and Lakemont Stable, won three of five career starts and posted $223,670 in earnings.

Sad sad news and I feel terrible for Satish and even worse for Odysseus and all the other horses who become afflicted with laminitis. You could really tell how much he loved that colt just by listening to him on ATR. Laminitis really is a b*tch...hopefully with all the advances in veterinary medicine someone can come up with something to help in fighting this disease.

Shocked to read this, and very sad. My heart goes out to Satish.

Oh darn........this is so upsetting. Poor boy - he was so talented.

Malibu Moon has the worst luck with his sons; The owner of Concord Point owned an MM colt (Clutch Player ?) who died earlier this year...........

Terribly jarred to read this news. Poor Odysseus. I'm sure they managed the pain as best they could, but laminitis is so terrible. I feel so badly for Satish. We've got to beat this.

So Sad, what a beautiful horse.

Having treated horses for laminitis myself, I know how cruel and heart breaking this affliction is to the horses and the people that love them.

Satish and family so sorry

so sorry Ody and Satish. A constant reminder of the the extremes of the sport, the best thrills and the heartbreaking losses such as this.
