Default Super Saver Retired

Thoroughbred Daily News:

Kentucky Derby Hero Super Saver Retired to WinStar
WinStar announced that Super Saver (Maria's Mon--Supercharger, by A.P. Indy), its homebred GI Kentucky Derby hero, has been retired and will enter stud at the Versailles, Kentucky, farm in 2011. In addition to his epic victory for trainer Todd Pletcher under the Twin Spires, the bay colt captured the 2009 GII Kentucky Jockey Club S., and was a close second in the GI Arkansas Derby. "We're really excited about it," said Kenny Troutt, WinStar's owner. The regally bred three-year-old, from the immediate family of leading young sire Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) as well as GI Breeders' Cup Sprint standout Girolamo (A.P. Indy), emerged from an unplaced effort in the GI Travers S. with bone bruising. "Everyone felt that he could come back at the peak of his game, but you always run the risk if he got hurt again--you just never know," Troutt explained. "He won the Derby. He's done a lot of things: he broke his maiden by seven, he won the biggest two-year-old race in Kentucky and he had a lot of speed. He broke the stakes record that day. It was unfortunate that he got beat maybe six inches in the Arkansas Derby."

The last Kentucky Derby winner (who didn't suffer a catastrophic injury in the Preakness) who never won another race in his career?

Yeah, but Mine that Bird hasn't retired yet. Was thinking Grindstone, but Monarchos also appears to fit the bill. How many Derby winners ran subsequent races and never got within ten lengths of the winner? Man, was Super Saver bad in his post-Derby starts.

Translation: If we continue to run him, we'd devalue him (if it's possible) even more than his last three races already have.
