Hopefully he'll improve off this race.

Lloyd came out of the race having caught himself, but otherwise OK. He broke uncharacteristically slowly for him and was lacking his usual burst in this first race back after 6 months away. Gary is wondering if the lack of early drive may be attributable to the hind end issue that had him sidelined. He has been sharp in his workouts, but those come after jogs and warming up as opposed to the push you get at the start of a race. We'll know more in a couple days.

Well, it turns out that Friday's Maiden was more Special than Claiming.. Was as deep a MCLM as you're likely to find with the McLaughlin winner ringing up an 88 Beyer for his effort. Lloyd got a 61 which is not that far out of line with his spring numbers if he simply needed the race off the 6 month break.

How did Lloyd exit his race on Friday and what's next?

He exited the race a bit tired as he left a bit of his dinner overnight and yesterday morning. But he was feeling quite good and peppy this morning according to Paul. The problem that surfaced Friday was him catching himself just below his left hock... an unusual place for a horse to kick himself.

There were three horizontal cuts on the inside of the left there, and they were more than superficial. They are puffy swollen and it is typical to get minor infections from the dirt that gets in these kinds of bruises. The question is what he did to catch himself there... He's never done it before.

The good news seems to be that his hind end is NOT bothering him. And he never changed leads Friday after doing so beautifully in all of his recent works, and that accounts for his leveling off in the stretch after looking like he was going to finish well coming off the turn.

Given that the race turned out to be super tough with the 2 McLaughlins getting mid-high 80's Beyers, the race was probably better than it looked. As soon as the bruises heal and as long as it appears there isn't anything bothering him, we'll enter back in the first available similar spot.
