i was reminded of this thread when i read an article yesterday in which graham motion said this of animal kingdom:

Though Animal Kingdom's future depends on his ownership team, Motion promised, "No matter what happens Saturday, I believe you'll hear more of this horse. Winning the Derby on dirt was a bonus for us. His future is clearly on grass."

too bad that the start cost him today; you'd have to think he'd have at least hit the board if he'd had a clean break. now, what's next for the derby winner?

Motion said it on TV today. Most likely he will be on the turf after about a month off with eyes on the BC Classic at Churchill.

Arlington Million is apparently what he told Costas on NBC.

after his success at churchill last month, i can see why they'd want another try at the dirt in nov. and with this crop, it seems they're all going to take turns beating each other. no clear standout this year. he's the top of the heap based on his derby win-but it's not much of a heap at this point.

and i was hoping the arl million would be their choice.

I didn't hear a specific race. He just said turf in August. Sure sounds like the Arlington Million. Could he mean the Secretariat? It's 1 1/4 and G1. It's also $600,000 less is the thing, but it's restricted to 3yos.

Before the race, Barry Irwin said they'll run him in the Arlington Million. He also said they'll run him in a race on a synthetic track before the BC Classic, but he didn't specify which race.

To be specific he said the Arlington Million OR the Secretariat, both are Grade 1 races on the lawn.

Arlington has to be awful happy about that development if it holds true.

From Twitter...

Irwin: We want to be champion & will probably have to look at the Travers.

Irwin: I really thought we were going to win the Belmont. Losing changed things.

Teresa Genaro posting those.

Yet he told Bob Costas the chances of winning yesterday weren't good because of the track.

Somebody get him a Midol.

He is sick of weathermen like Jim Cantore and Al Roker lying to him about the weather

Thumbs down

I thought Irwin came across as a crybaby before the race, yes the track surface stunk, but everyone was in the same boat, his horse ran well despite the horrible start, but he just had an a-hole smugness in the interview, here's hoping Banned beats him in the Secretariat, he's just hard to cheer for.

'Motion said that the timing of those Arlington races is “a good fit” and that he and Barry Irwin, the president of the Team Valor International syndicate that owns Animal Kingdom, must decide whether to run him once or twice between now and the Breeders’ Cup.'

once or twice...lovely

Not sure about the timing of this article from the NY Dailynews, but it appears Irwin has changed his mind. Also, Johnny V none to happy with Rajiv Maragh:
