Default NY Legislature to push a ban on Lasix

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...#ixzz1Xquhh4hY

>>>A New York lawmaker said he will introduce legislation banning use of “performance-enhancing drugs” such as the anti-bleeding medication furosemide, or Salix.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Thomas Duane outlines penalties, including a permanent ban from racing after three violations.<<<

We ban all other athletes in every other sport from taking performance-enhancing drugs both for their safety and to maintain the integrity of their sports,” Duane said in a statement. “Yet we embrace the idea of dispensing Lasix to horses so they won’t have a nosebleed or develop blood in their lungs during a big race. This is unacceptable.”

Painkilling injections are routinely given to players in the NFL.. Is that not enhancing their perfomance and it clearly endangers their safety?

I remember when NY was the only jurisdiction that didn't allow lasix. How it used to be a bit of a deal to see if the Derby - Preakness horses would go to NY and run the Belmont sans lasix.

Tom Duane is an absolute dunce who reflects everything that is wrong with today's politicians. Another political hack looking for an issue to get press without any grasp as to the actual facts underlying the issue. If it sounds good to the uninformed, press the issue regardless of the facts.

NY politics, with the exception of Governor Cuomo, is in a sad state of affairs today. Indeed, a microcosm of our federal government in general.

Funny how this guy has basically presented his case in a way that, even if you're anti-Salix, makes him look like an idiot. A pretty special accomplishment.

Very well put..

The quotes from the press release that Grening uses in his DRF piece are astonishing.

And by the way.. Everyone should stop betting immediately! Duane’s release states that until this bill becomes law, he urges "everyone to refrain from wagering on any horse that is being dosed with Lasix - or worse.’’

I think it should be more like 106,580 on the list.

I appreciate this idiot for giving everyone a glimpse into what Federal intervention into racing might look like.

Sounds like Mr. Duane is trying to be PETA's 'Man of the Year'.............incredible that this will even see the light of day. This certainly has to be the main concern of every New York state resident. Please..............unfortunately, there will be other morons in different states that will adopt the same philosophy. Usually they justify everything they do........ 'for the children' now it's become............'for the horsies'. Pathetic.
