Default Iranian actress sentenced to 90 lashes

along with a year in jail for starring in an Australian film critical of Iranian society. She was arrested one day and sentenced the next...what a joke! Again, hopefully global outcry will have an effect but this is but another example of the barbarity of Iranian Islam.

Might just be the best chance she has....Oman is not a democracy but they don't treat their women like cattle. The brand of Islam practiced in Iran bears little resemblance to mainstream Islam, unfortunately Iran is not alone in their perversions.

Oh, turns out today Iran as yet more to worry about, regarding the United States opinion of them ....

Reads like a B movie script but we are talking about Iran. I suspect the fallout from this might be more Saudi and Israel's reactions. Will be interesting!

Are you kidding me? Saudi reaction? They, like Iran don't let their women drive, vote in only local elections, marry daughters off as minors to strangers, like a pimp, kill them for dishonor and and put their ambassador in the US as the donkey in a Tijuana donkey show.

Israel needs to do a bit of homework and decide whether this is the start of a war. But I agree, it will be interesting.

Agreed but the plot to kill the Saudi big-wig will ruffle feathers don't you think? Not sure about the convoluted Iranian logic here unless the plan was to blame Israel or blame the Saudis if plan B was used....

Oh I'm sure it will ruffle Saudi feathers and may even lead to a dreaded UN sanction. But Israel may seek a more hands on approach. Iran has been consistent in their call to kill every Jew in Israel, including women and children. Their logic isn't convoluted their soul and religion is.

Again, I agree. Iran is the most dangerous country in the world right now, more so than North Korea, because it's leaders are nuts...pure and simple. The leader of North Korea isn't exactly the poster boy for "Mental Health Today" but he and his followers at least don't have a death wish. In my opinion, Iranian Islam is a cult far apart from traditional Islam. Saudi Arabia could be a player here as China appears the logical stumbling block to any international sanctions but the Saudis have more than enough oil to replace any lost by China should they go along with sanctions while loss of Saudi oil would be a hardship for Chinese economy. Israel is the most likely to take direct action, while I would support them that would drive a wedge between them and more moderate Islamic states. Sooner or later, Iran will have to be dealt with...while it's tempting to blow the hell out of them, there are signs that the youth hunger for a more democratic state...

Why would any woman support Islam willingly with this kind of truly draconian "justice" being dealt out? This should be the number one priority of the women's advocacy group - bringing this to light.

You hit it right on the head. It absolutely is barbarism. Disgusting.

why do women willingly support most religions? is it support, or are they hoping to change it? all religions have their 'good' side, but they all have a dark side as well. religion has a tendency to try to put women in their place. now, not all still have the sheer violence you see in the extreme forms of islam, but it preaches inequality all the same.
there are still parts of india where the widow is thrown, alive, onto her late husbands funeral pyre. it's tradition you see. she's just one more of his possessions that needs to travel to the other side with him...
catholics-no women need apply. baptists-women must submit to their husbands. oh, teaching bible school? nope, bible says only men can do that, you're fired.
etc, etc, etc

Yeah I get that. Good points. I never read that as literally as others though - I mean "submit to your husband" I always read more along the lines that when a decision needs to be made, in order to avoid deadlock, after discussion, one party should be able to make that decision. And that party should absolutely be taking the other's input seriously into account. It could the reverse where the wife is the more effective decision maker. Or, as many couples do, there is a loose division of responsibility based on expertise.

Back to the point - if one gets 90 lashes for being critical or disagreeing with the government, where is the threshold for capital punishment? Jaywalking? They needn't even specify it as such - how many lashes would be fatal? 300? 400?
