Those of us in the NY area who were harness fans in the 70's remember Stan Bergstein fondly. RIP and good night, Stan.

Not to Mention Jack E Lee.. Who doesn't remember Mr AAA wiring them 4 weeks in a row with the red man in the bike. Naturally the only reason we watched initially was because Crusher Blackwell was battling Haystacks Calhoun in the reinforced robes match at Midnight on WWWF

BTW, when he wasn't drinking, Jack E. Lee was the best harness announcer ever. Lines like "He can see them all!" and "Innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Front!" were classic!

I seem to recall a pacer named Cigar Store Injun, or something like that, from those days. |

Stan did a great job of explaining harness racing to us Thoroughbred fans. At one time, the harness racing TV show was on WOR-TV on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights (before cable TV was prominent).
I thought he was always at his best with a young Dave Johnson as his broadcasting partner. He did a great interview with trainer Bob Farrington in the mid-1970's and made popular the tale of the wonder horse, Rambling Willie.. RIP, Stan.... |
