I thought this story was a nice use of the horse's name.
When Does a Thoroughbred Reach its Highest Value? Could it be that a thoroughbred reaches its highest value the day it is born when it has had no failures and only great potential lies ahead? His bloodlines are better than most and it shows from the start. He is stronger and more robust than any of the other colts or fillies born that year. He is smart too and seems to understand what his calling will be. He prances around the field with an instinctive knowledge that he is special. His owners have to be wondering if this is the next Secretariat. Is his highest value showing over a nine year racing career where over half the time he places in the money? His noble head cuts through the wind like a racing yacht through choppy seas. This horse instinctively knows how to position himself to win. He also knows how to protect himself so that he can stay sound to race another day. On those days he once again finds himself in the winners circle he behaves like a champion. He poses for the cameras, ears forward and head held high. Or is his highest value reached the day he is officially retired and donated by his loving owners to MidAtlantic Horse Rescue in hopes that he will find a forever home? This animal that has for so many years understood what it means to be a great racehorse. He has taken his job seriously, enjoyed the thrill of competing and done it to the best of his ability will now take on new challenges. I found such a thoroughbred at MidAtlantic Horse Rescue and I say his highest value has been reached with me. Together we are both trying something new, eventing. Dressage and jumping are nothing like racing but once again he masters them. Value is a difficult thing to measure. It's the pure joy I derive from watching him graze in the pasture while he keeps his small herd in-line. It also comes from the sound of his soft nicker when he sees me walking toward the barn or those quiet moments spent with him in his stall. Above all of these is the immeasurable pleasure I get every time I ride this noble beast. When did Highest Value reach his highest value? I say it has been reached with me in his forever home. |
