ESQUIRE: Milch interview (12/26: LA Times piece)
MOMENTUM, EXCITEMENT BUILDING FOR 'LUCK'..
http://www.esquire.com/the-side/qa/d...terview-011411 The organizing illusion in Luck is the notion that a horse crossing the finish line before another can truly change a man's life. As with Deadwood, the show's characters include all the men and women even peripherally invested in that illusion: jockeys, owners, trainers, low-lifes, misfits, criminals both petty and grand — notably Chester "Ace" Bernstein, played by a triumphant Dustin Hoffman. Milch's world of horse racing is different from his cops-and-robbers past, and not because the jockey genre is currently limited to, like, Seabiscuit. Because Deadwood is much the same, too — every man for himself, as long as every man agrees it's a prize worth winning.

Milch interview in L.A. Times...
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-...,5931388.story Is "Luck" your opus to horse racing? "I hope it's a love letter. By saying that, I'm not saying it's a story coming through rose-colored glasses. To me, the track is what the river was to Mark Twain. Where you see the most life and interesting people, go there. That's what I've done."

I never saw Deadwood when it was on TV. I just finished watching all 3 seasons during the past few weeks. Holy Krap! Best TV series I've ever seen. Long live Al "Swegin". I miss him already.

The way that series was killed prematurely is GDF shame.
