Default Giant Ryan

Update as of 10pm 6/9: Giant Ryan to go to New Bolton for surgery.

They must have a decent enough pulse in that foot that they think they can try to save him so I gotta think of this as good news for now. The last odds I've heard was 50/50 survival, but that was a few hours ago. Just to reiterate, he fractured both left front sesamoids and had ligament damage behind his left front ankle. On NBC earlier, Dr. Bramlage basically said the arterial damage was bad enough to make blood flow an issue. Fingers crossed.

Does anybody know the risk of laminitis with an injury like the left front vs. a hind leg in terms of equine weight distribution, getting up and down, etc?

Unfortunately laminitis is more likely than not with this type of injury, it's almost a given.

i think the lack of blood flow would be the most important factor at the moment. as for laminitis, i think the odds are the same of developing laminitis regardless front vs rear. hoping for the best, he needs all the luck he can get right now. and it's his right front that would bear the brunt of the extra weight...barbaro for instance developed laminitis first in his 'good' hind leg, but then in his front, which is why they put him down.

Default Monday afternoon update

From article at http://www.drf.com/news/giant-ryans-...ry-pushed-back

Quote:
Giant Ryan’s surgery to repair the severe injuries he sustained during the running of Saturday’s Grade 2 True North Handicap at Belmont Park has been postponed from Monday to Thursday at the earliest, owner Shivananda Parbhoo reported Tuesday.

... snip ...

“As of now the operation has been delayed until they can improve the blood flow in Giant Ryan’s leg,” said Parbhoo, whose father, Bisnath Parboo, trains the horse. “The doctors said they need to break up some blood clots in the leg that are causing the problem. They are treating Ryan with medication and are hoping the issue can be resolved within the next two days.”

... snip ...

“Once the blood flow is good, that’s the whole key right now,” said Parbhoo. “If the doctors can get that resolved, they seem confident the surgery on his leg will be successful.”

Reports that Giant Ryan had already been euthanized appeared on the New York State Racing and Wagering Board’s website on Monday. Parbhoo said he only learned of the erroneous reports early Tuesday afternoon.

*facepalm* In other news, the NYSRWB is also behind the celebrity death hoaxes on Twitter. Would it kill them to actually ask the connections?

@DRFGrening: Owner Shivanada Parbhoo just called to say that Giant Ryan was euthanized earlier today. Laminitis began to set in. Surgery not possible.

@DRFGrening: Parbhoo: "Ryan was unbelievable to us. This hit us really, really hard. We love this horse more than anything. It's very, very sad."

A terrible loss for the Parbhoos, and very sad news for his fans - count me among them.

Every indication is that the Parbhoos loved this horse beyond just making a living. They gave him a fighting chance to live. My deepest sympathy go out to them and many thanks for trying to save him.

Very sad, sometimes we as owners think with our hearts and not our heads, I too have made decisions that looking back would have probably been better to euthanize at the beginning, but it's a hard decision when you love the horse, my sympathies to the owners.
