Repeat winners
I came upon something by accident and it got me to wondering.
Here's the lead... Just as certain as arctic temperatures and snowfall by the foot, central Nebraska is visited every winter by an arthritic old gelding who is in his element when he runs in those harsh elements. It wouldn't be February at Fonner Park without trainer Joe Moss winding up the indefatigable Leaping Plum to win the Jake Grasmick Memorial Handicap again. http://articles.latimes.com/2002/feb...rts/sp-horse14 Now I had never heard of him and I realize it's an old story but it made me think of Zipping, who won the Sandown Classic 4 times (it's now named for him), of Mc Dynamo and the legend Kauto Star who have each won a particular race 5 times, of Goldikova, Big Bucks, Yeats and Desert Orchid (4) and some who have won a specific race three times (Viva Pataca, Zenyatta, Beef or Salmon, Big Zeb, Famous Name, Native Diver, Makybe Diva, Rahy's Attorney, and Black Caviars new friend Voila Ici to name the few that I know and can think of off the top of my head.). For everything I know about racing there are easily at least 20 million things I don't so who can tell me about a repeat winner that they've seen, know of, or believe everyone should know of? I'm going through the Holy Bull thread bit by bit as I had only seen a total of ONE of his races. That sounds horrible but it's true cause how do you ever know what you're missing when there is SO much history, so many fantastic horses and races... |

Famous Dirt Handicap races of NY:
Brooklyn Handicap (Discovery and Forego both won 3 straight) Carter Handicap (no horse has ever won 3 straight) Met Mile (Devil Diver only horse to win 3 straight -- Equipoise was DQ'd in '34 or would have joined him) Suburban Handicap (no horse has ever won this race 3 times) Whitney Handicap (Discovery is the only horse to win it 3 straight times) Famous Dirt non handicaps of NY: Jockey Club Gold Cup (Kelso won it 5 years in a row -- easily each time. No other horse has won it 3 straight) Woodward (Forego won it 4 years in a row. Kelso won it 3 years in a row) Famous Dirt Handicaps of CAL: Santa Anita Handicap: (no horse has tripled) Hollywood Gold Cup (Lava Man and Native Diver both won it 3 years in a row) Pacific Classic (no horse has won it 3 years in a row) No horse has won the Donn, Gulfstream Park Handicap, Stephen Foster, or Clark 3 times. Goldikova is the only horse to ever win 3 Breeders Cup races -- as she won the BC Mile 3 years in a row. |

One of my old favorites, 10YO Musketier, won the Singspiel Stakes (G3, Woodbine) in 2009, 2011 and 2 weeks ago. He runs this Saturday at Arlington in the Stars and Stripes, by the way, spotting the others 5-7 pounds.

Honor Medal was a nose short (to stablemate Galba no less) of winning the New Orleans Handicap for three straight years.

I just looked at the history for the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap -- the race Awesome Again used as a final prep for his Breeders Cup Classic win instead of the Goodwood.
The Hall of Famer Sun Beau is the only horse to win that race 3 straight times. A lot of great names have won the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap: Sun Beau, Equipoise, Discovery, Challedon, Round Table, Kelso, Dr. Fager, Awesome Again ... and of course, Perfect Drift. |

I didn't realize any of those horses had won it.
My point of reference only goes back as far as about It's No Joke and Super Frolic... right around 2005 (?)ish. |
