![]() i dont play on mon and tuesday save for churchill card..any thoughts this
it it my personal opinion that the one factor that is most undersated in handycapping is the way the track is set up on a daily basis by the grounds crews...ive seen this in person where a track was set up so the 7-8 path was compacted on a sloppy day and the smart jocks new the way to the winners circle... thoughts ...just like in sports the refs controll the game..... |

I've actually come to like Tuesdays and Mondays as much as any other day provided its in the spring, summer, fall. Calder, Finger Lakes, and Delaware are pretty cool tracks to play, as is Turf Paradise. Granted many of the races are cheap but the biases you just mentioned are among the reasons I absolutely love them. Hoove syou have to remember that in NY, Ky, Cali you are playing against the sharpest sharks in the water. Everyone is using sheets, clocker info is sold to high bidders, and the coeverage of these tracks leads to no secrets regarding bad trips and horses who ran against the bias. Look at the payouts on the NYRA circuit on a daily basis where exactas often pay less than win place parlay(the accepted method for years on what the exacta should pay at a bare minimum), pik-3's that pay less or the same as the parlay, and doubles that make you scratch your head. Its not the results I question, its the fact that payouts are consistently underlaid. This is because the sharpies are battling one another and the larger pool sizes are negated by the sharp money in them. Those tracks I just mentioned don't have as many sharpies betting them and especially on days with biases, you can make a score. Yesterday I took some tough beats, but take a look at the last pik-3 at Turf Paradise where I managed to get unstuck for the day on a small wager. I played an 8 dollar pik-3 3,6/1,2,3,6/2,3. It cost me 128 bucks. I didn't have any hopes of getting out or ahead on the day. I just thought I could get some back as it looked like a decent play. First part was won by the 3 who only paid 4.80 and I said ah ****, now I can't make squat. 2nd leg was won by the 2 who paid 8.60. In the last leg the 2 lost by an eigth of an inch, and everyone thought he won including the cameraman but then they dq'd the 3 horse for a bad foul. 2 paid 12.60. Now the 3 horse parlay would pay 130 dollars even. When they put up the pik-3 payout I was kinda pissed because it said 122.80. But that was before I realized it was for one dollar, not two. Thats almost twice the parlay and that was incredible value. I love Finger Lakes and always have. Its the kinda track that you have to follow daily and keep track of the biases for, but if you do you canbet against some really bad faves who don't have a snowball's chance in hell. Delware is getting bad now, they close this weekend and the rain has left small fields with big chalks, but most of the year they pay great as well. Its different than playing the big tracks, no doubt. You don't have the supertrainers with gaudy percentages winning most of the races and the jockey colonies aren't so top heavy that only the big guys win most of teh races. But thats what makes it cool. You look at any given race and you can't just toss half the field on bad connections. Now once November ends and Mon and Tues bring me Philly and Tampa bay, two tracks I consider impossible and that i hate, I say no way. I'm also not a Gulfstream guy except for weekends(which is when they have the only decent cards anymore the last 3 years). But maybe next year you wanna start following Delaware, Calder, and Finger Lakes. I think you might be surprised at the value they can bring to you. |

I took a tragic beat in the last race at Finger Lakes that cost me 4400 bucks and was inconsolable. I liked a confirmed hanger who was a huge closer to run 2nd or 3rd in the tri, the 6 horse. So its a horrible cheap field but I see a lot of speed and figure that sets up the 6 horses late run to suck up into the tri. I had lost a nose photo in the last race at Philly so decided to cut down my bet at FL. You guessed it, I was originally using 5 horses on top of the 6 for 2nd and 3rd with all, and cut out one of the five horses on top I was using to save a lousy 22 bucks. That 22 bucks I "saved" cost me 4400 bucks. You really missed an outsatnding tantrum complete with cursing and swearing at myself for being incredibly stupid and cheap. No Calder today and Finger and Delaware will be under water again so I'm passing and have to get a lotta work done and then later will look at tomorrow's carryovers. The cheaper tracks are definitely an acquired taste but if you stick with them and follow them a while before actually playing them and get a feel for the horses, jocks, trainers, and make bias and trip notes the money is there. |

Speed biases suck because it the public spots them quickly and only so many horses in a given race posess the speed to make the lead in a race and it limits the potential outcomes. The public is far less intuitive to catch onto a closing bias or dead rail(which is usally he cause of a closing bias) and when they do its often real late in the day. The public has a harder time seeing a race unfold on a closing bias and a harder time accepting that the "best horse" with speed will just quit on sheer faith in the bias. I salivate at those closing biases because the even running style horses who draw the outside of a potential speed mixup go off at overlaid prices and jockeys cant do much to avoid a bad rail if they have drawn inside with frontrunners. Its harder to outthink a closing bias or dead rail. Speed horses tend to take the most cash as well. |
