The once 4th largest city is bankrupt
Who's next, LA,Chi town, NYC? Where did all the factories go?...sung to the tune of .. Where have all the flowers gone. Great city back in the 50's..My mom's brother's family lived there and we visited couple times...now in ruins..sickening..

Somehow me thinks if the political environment we have today was around 150 years ago, Acme Buggy Whip Co. would still be in business in Tombstone AZ and the USPO would still have a token force delivering on horseback. Detroit is going nowhere and like private companies seeking reorganization will be allowed to negotiate with creditors, employees and pension obligations and create a new business plan. It will come back as a smaller city but nonetheless a city and will be much more beautiful than the sore it is now. A Federal bailout, using funds from citizens of fiscally responsible, well managed cities and towns would be akin to stealing from a neighbor to repair your junk car. |

pensions are in trouble because of many things, one no doubt the current interest climate.
detroit is a good example of the migration south. 50 years ago, about 9 of the top 10 cities were in the north. now it's pretty much flip-flopped.

so, who are the real crooks?
one thing that struck me--the article on fox sports asking if the new arena would be built for the red wings. now, i know it's a sports news site-but i think detroit has far bigger fish to fry than a hockey arena... |

God help us. The President declared Detroit saved after the gigantic rip-off of taxpayer dollars known as the GM bailout and now bailout is being mentioned again?

51%. a majority...technically, yes. but far from a mass movement. 51% is not enough to justify it, and it would be a huge mistake. i figure the major concern is detroit setting a precedent for cities all over pulling a similar stunt. detroits been on the skids for years. they didn't suddenly lose two thirds of thei population. this is what happens when an administration doesn't change with the times. as the population went down govt. had to shrink as wel, but didn't. they kept their heads in the sand for years, rather than confront reality.

As long as the 51% don't influence the decision to grant a wasted bailout, throwing yet more money away, jimmy crack corn and I don't care, dem or rep.

Bah humbug.I better get my check next week or i march on Wash Does Detroit still make cars? If so give em a few bucks.. Psychology 101 - This Is Brilliant!! If you start with a cage containing five monkeys and inside the cage, hang a banana on a string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana, before long a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeys with cold water. After a while another monkey makes an attempt with same result ... all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it. Now, put the cold water away. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and attempts to climb the stairs. To his shock, all of the other monkeys beat the crap out of him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted. Next, remove another of the original five monkeys, replacing it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment...... with enthusiasm, because he is now part of the "team". Then, replace a third original monkey with a new one, followed by the fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Now, the monkeys that are beating him up have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs. Neither do they know why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey. Finally, having replaced all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys will have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, not one of the monkeys will try to climb the stairway for the banana. Why, you ask? Because in their minds...that is the way it has always been! This, my friends, is how Congress operates... and this is why, from time to time: ALL of the monkeys need to be REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME
