Shanghai Bobby retired; Data Link to Claiborne; Joyful Victory to sell

Shanghai Bobby, undefeated during his 2-year-old championship season in 2012, has been retired from racing due to an injury and will stand stud next year at Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky, according to a press release issued Sunday by his connections. According to the release, Shanghai Bobby came out of his victory in the Sept. 20 Aljamin Stakes at Belmont Park with an injury to a suspensory ligament. That race was his first start since being sidelined with a pelvic fracture when finishing fifth in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream on March 30. Shanghai Bobby was using the Aljamin as a prep for a start in either the Breeders’ Cup Sprint or Dirt Mile at Santa Anita, where last year he capped off a 5-for-5 campaign with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Data Link to Claiborne; Joyful Victory to sell
Data Link retired, to stand at Claiborne Farm
By DRF Breeding Staff Grade 1 winner Data Link has been retired from racing and will begin his stallion career in 2014 at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky. The 5-year-old son of War Front finishes his career with eight wins from 18 races for earnings of $831,335. Four of those wins came in graded stakes company, highlighted by the Grade 1 Makers 46 Mile at Keeneland Race Course in 2012. Data Link, who was trained by Shug McGaughey, also set a course record on the Monmouth Park turf at 1 1/8 miles, winning the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes in the same year. Data Link was foaled and raised at Claiborne for owner/breeder Stuart Janney III, and now joins his sire War Front on the farm’s stallion roster. =

Joyful Victory retired, to sell at Fasig-Tipton
By DRF Breeding Staff Grade 1 winner Joyful Victory has been retired from racing and will be offered at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky selected fall mixed sale in November. The 5-year-old Tapit mare made her final start on Saturday in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita, in which she finished third behind Beholder and Authenticity. Joyful Victory retires with seven wins from 20 starts, including four wins in graded stakes company, for earnings of $1,252,679.
